Job Summary

Rocky Mountain Steel Mills is seeking an Area Manager- Maintenance to provide strategic and operational leadership for maintenance activities within the melting shop of our steel manufacturing facility. This role is accountable for asset reliability, safety performance, cost control, continuous improvement and employee relations for bargaining and non-bargaining employees. The Area Manager partners with reliability, engineering, operations, and cross functional teams to ensure maintenance projects support production throughput and quality while adhering to regulatory, safety, and collective bargaining agreements. By leading a skilled maintenance workforce, driving preventative and predictive maintenance strategies, overseeing reliability and capital initiatives, and promoting a strong safety and continuous improvement culture, the Area Manager ensure sustained equipment availability and long-term operational excellence, while optimizing spend.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership for maintenance personnel by overseeing workforce planning, talent development, succession planning, performance management, and disciplinary processes in compliance with Company policies and Collective Bargaining Agreements; build a high‑accountability, skills‑based maintenance organization capable of sustaining 24/7 melting operations.
  • Establish clear performance expectations and accountability frameworks aligned with operational throughput, safety, reliability, cost, and quality objectives; evaluate individual and team contributions using data‑driven KPIs while ensuring adherence to Company policies and union agreements.
  • Own Asset Reliability and Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) strategy for melting shop assets (EAFs, ladle furnaces, cranes, power systems, hydraulics, and auxiliaries); drive preventive, predictive, and condition‑based maintenance programs; analyze failure data, audit performance, identify trends, and lead long‑term reliability improvement plans.
  • Direct and oversee execution of complex maintenance repairs, rebuilds, and installations while providing senior‑level technical leadership during critical equipment failures; prioritize work to protect melt shop uptime, electrical integrity, refractory performance, and production schedules, and collaborate with Operations, Engineering, OEMs, and vendors to diagnose root causes, implement corrective actions, and prevent recurrence—while meeting safety, quality, and cost expectations.
  • Continuously improve maintenance systems, processes, and workflows by applying reliability engineering principles, Lean tools, and the RMSM Business System, while aligning maintenance execution with plant and melt shop objectives to support production schedules, quality standards, energy efficiency, reduced downtime, and extended asset life.
  • Own the maintenance operating budget for the assigned area, forecasting and managing repair and maintenance spending, controlling overtime and contractor costs, and delivering results within approved financial targets.
  • Serve as the primary communication and coordination link for maintenance, presenting strategies, risks, performance metrics, and improvement initiatives in department and cross‑functional leadership meetings while maintaining strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead safety, health, and environmental compliance for maintenance operations, establishing and enforcing safe work practices, ensuring regulatory compliance, and fostering a proactive safety culture in a high‑hazard melting shop environment.
  • Lead strategic maintenance materials and inventory management, overseeing procurement, organization, and optimization of spare parts and materials to ensure equipment availability, supplier performance, and cost control.

Education And Experience

  • Four year degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline or accredited apprenticeship required plus 7 years working experience required.
  • 5 years experience as a maintenance supervisor in the mechanical or electrical fields required.
  • 5 years steel making and caster experience required.

Knowledge, Skills And Competencies

  • Strong Electrical and Mechanical experience to include a high degree of PLC, Drive, Instrumentation and Automation experience
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems
  • Technical experience with high voltage systems, motor control, process automation
  • Experienced with industrial water systems and bag houses.
  • Proficient in blue print reading and troubleshooting of mechanical operations of equipment
  • Strong leadership and management skills to oversee and motivate teams effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities to interact with staff, stakeholders, and clients.
  • Proficiency in strategic planning and decision-making to drive operational efficiency and productivity.
  • In-depth knowledge of manufacturing processes and operations to optimize workflow and resource allocation.
  • Understanding of lean manufacturing principles to minimize waste and improve overall efficiency.
  • Ability to analyze data and key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify areas for improvement.
  • Experience in implementing and maintaining quality management systems (e.g., ISO standards).
  • Familiarity with health and safety regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Skilled in budgeting, cost control, and financial analysis to manage operational expenses effectively.
  • Problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities to address challenges and improve processes.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Capacity to adapt to changing circumstances and handle high-pressure situations.
  • Knowledge of supply chain management and inventory control to optimize material flow.
  • Experience in implementing process improvement methodologies (e.g., Six Sigma) to enhance operations.
  • Ability to foster a culture of continuous improvement and employee development.
  • Understanding of performance metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor and measure performance.
  • Proven track record of achieving operational goals and targets.

Target Hire Date: 08/03/2026 - 8/15/2026

Compensation: $145,000 - $160,000
