Lead Maintenance Technician

Position Summary

The Lead Maintenance Technician is responsible for providing daily leadership, supervision, and technical support to a team of maintenance technicians while ensuring that work orders are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards. This position serves as the primary point of contact for their assigned maintenance zone and works closely with the Director of Maintenance to coordinate personnel, prioritize work, and respond to emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 7 years of commercial, industrial, or institutional maintenance experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of leadership, supervisory, or crew lead experience.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, locksmithing, and general building maintenance.
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and equipment manuals.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check and pre-employment requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • North Carolina trade license in HVAC, Plumbing, or Electrical.
  • EPA Universal Certification.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification.
  • Experience working in K-12 schools, government facilities, or large commercial buildings.
  • Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direct leadership and supervision for a team of approximately five Maintenance Technicians.
  • Assign, monitor, and follow each technician's work orders from start to completion, ensuring work is completed on time, within budget, and to district quality standards.
  • Provide hands-on technical support, coaching, and assistance whenever needed to help technicians successfully complete assigned work.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with applicable building codes, district standards, and safety regulations.
  • Coordinate daily schedules, prioritize emergency requests, and communicate with school administrators regarding maintenance activities.
  • Assist in training and mentoring new maintenance employees.
  • Support the Director of Maintenance in planning projects, evaluating workloads, and improving departmental efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate records of work orders, labor, materials, and equipment.
  • Coordinate with outside contractors when necessary.
  • Promote a positive team environment focused on professionalism, accountability, customer service, and continuous improvement.
  • Respond to major after-hours emergencies and assist maintenance staff during critical situations.
  • Must be on the rotating on-call schedule, serving on call approximately every 4 to 6 weeks, and respond to emergencies outside of normal working hours when required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Maintenance.

This position should foster a culture of collaboration, support fellow technicians, and ensure the Maintenance Department provides timely, high-quality service to all Rockingham County Schools facilities.

Salary : $38,585 - $50,813
