An inclusion intern will work with individuals, primarily between the ages of 5-12 with various disabilities in a recreational camp or after school setting. An intern will work closely with 1 – 2 individuals to help them successfully participate in programs with their typically developing peers. They will gain knowledge and hands-on experience on how to adapt and modify activities, implement different behavior intervention techniques and how to utilize alternative communication methods. Interns may also gain exposure to the process of completing participant assessments and the development and implementation of an individualized care plan within the recreation setting. An intern will work closely and collaboratively with other staff members and agencies. The internship will provide the intern with practical experience, and important skills that will serve them in many future professional environments, particularly those that require inclusiveness and diversity awareness.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned

Operational Excellence

  • Participates with, monitors, and assists participants for maximum participation within art programs
  • With guidance from supervisor, implements adaptive techniques and intervention strategies to allow for maximum program participation and meet individual needs of participants
  • Assists in identifying barriers, writing daily logs, tracks and evaluates participant program, and communicates with parents/guardians
  • Exercises confidentiality in all aspects regarding the participants in programs
  • Completes required paperwork correctly and on-time, accident reports, daily logs, behavior incident reports and other information as requested by the Recreation Coordinator
  • Acts as an interactive positive role model, leads by example, and uses good judgment at all times
  • Attends scheduled staff meetings and training sessions as determined by supervisor
  • Works as a team to provide care for physical needs, toileting, transferring, or pushing participants in wheelchairs, while following RPD guidelines for personal care
  • Maintains a working knowledge of department safety procedures. Attend safety training programs and educational in-service trainings as required
  • May be required to work alongside other departments and agencies as an effective team member
  • Implement behavior management and intervention techniques to assist with participant success within the program
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

Education/Experience

Some Experience Working With Individuals With Disabilities Preferred.

The Requirements Listed Below Are Representative Of The Knowledge, Skill, And/or Ability Required.   • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must maintain a Valid Driver's License
  • Experience writing and implementing positive behavior plans.
  • Experience working with various designs of communication to include picture systems.
  • Good organizational and leadership skills for daily supervision and direction of participants
  • Good communication skills including expressive, written, and receptive
  • Flexibility to work at various locations as assignments are subject to change during the length of the season
  • Ability to problem solve in a variety of situations
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and demonstrate flexibility as a team player
  • Ability to work in stressful conditions, including situations involving disability related needs and dissatisfied customers
  • Ability to use computer programs for creating and retrieving reports and schedules.
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED training (Can be obtained through Rockford Park District as determined necessary by supervisor)
