What are the responsibilities and job description for the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic position at Rockford Ambulance?
Title: EMT- Basic
Reports to: Field Supervisor
Job Summary:
Works under the direction of a licensed Paramedic adhering to the rules and regulations set forth by the MDCIS, in the care and transportation of the sick and injured. Participates in required continuing education programs as mandated by the MDCIS to maintain a current EMT license.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Responds to all ambulance runs as the dispatcher assigns them, and does so
according to company established standards in a safe manner.
2. Maintains Basic skills:
- Taking of vital signs
- Application of dressings and splints
- Basic airway management
- CPR
- Oxygen administration
- Extrication techniques
- History taking
- Safe and defensive emergency and non-emergency driving technique
- Appropriate radio usage, including the ability to give complete and concise Med-com reports
- Proper spinal immobilization
- Childbirth techniques
- Advanced airway techniques
- Manual defibrillation
3. Maintains ability to operate various pieces of equipment:
- KED board
- Spinal immobilization devices
- Oxygen regulators
- Sphygmomanometer
- VHF and UHF radios
- Stretchers
4. Maintains a thorough knowledge of the KCEMS protocols.
5. Maintains a thorough knowledge of the Rockford’s service area.
6. Records all information concisely, accurately and completely on the appropriate
forms i.e.: run reports, billing sheets, Medicare forms, ambulance check list form.
7. Maintains his/her ambulance and station, making sure they are clean and stocked
with appropriate supplies.
8. Communicates well with other personnel such as medical and emergency service
physicians, nurses, firefighters and police officers.
9. Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with HIPPA.
10. Performs all other duties as determined appropriate by management.
11. Strives for personal safety as well as the safety of those around them. Specifically
the employee will be conscious of infectious disease precautions, hazardous
materials response, driver safety, back safety and all other safety related issues.

Qualifications:
- Current EMT License required
- Driver's License required. Chauffeur’s license required within the first 30 days of employment
Physical Demands/Working Conditions:
1. Must be able to respond quickly to ambulance calls
2. Must be able to perform strenuous activities, including but not limited to climbing, stairs, lifting, moving heavy equipment, water rescues, etc. over difficult terrain, dangerous environments, and/or inclement weather
3. Must be able to safely operate emergency vehicles
4. Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, driving, lifting etc.
