Conformal Coating Operator
About the Role
As a Conformal Coating Operator at Rocket EMS, you will play a key role in protecting high-reliability PCB assemblies by applying, inspecting, and verifying conformal coating materials. You'll work with production, engineering, and quality teams to ensure all boards meet customer, IPC-A-610, and internal workmanship standards. This position requires strong attention to detail, steady hands, and the ability to follow precise documentation and masking requirements in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
Review job documentation, including MPIs, assembly drawings, ECOs, masking instructions, and customer requirements prior to starting work.
Mask boards accurately using tapes, dots, boots, and custom masks to protect keep-out areas from coating material.
Operate conformal coating equipment such as selective coating machines, spray booths, or dip-coating systems, depending on job requirements.
Verify coating material viscosity, mix ratios, and application parameters; document measurements as required.
Apply conformal coating (urethane, acrylic, silicone, parylene, or other materials as specified) according to defined thickness, coverage, and curing requirements.
Inspect coated assemblies for proper coverage, thickness, defects, and compliance with IPC-A-610, customer specifications, and workmanship standards.
Identify and correct coating and masking defects; escalate recurring issues to the Lead, Engineer, or Supervisor.
Perform rework or touch-up coating as needed using brushes, spray guns, or approved tools.
Cure assemblies using appropriate equipment (ovens, UV cure systems, etc.) and verify completion per process standards.
Complete first-article verification and in-process inspection forms when required.
Maintain clean, organized work areas and strictly follow ESD, FOD, and chemical handling safety procedures.
Record production data, coating material usage, and pass-down information accurately.
Support cross-training and assist in other production areas as directed by Supervisor, Engineer, or Manager.
Participate in 5S and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance process quality and efficiency.
Qualifications
Education
High school diploma or equivalent (required)
Experience
Minimum 1–2 years of conformal coating, masking, or electronics assembly experience in a manufacturing environment (preferred).
Experience with selective coating equipment or manual spray equipment (preferred).
IPC-A-610 certification (preferred or required depending on role level).
Skills
Strong attention to detail and steady hands for precise masking and coating.
Ability to read MPIs, assembly drawings, and coating diagrams.
Understanding of coating coverage requirements, keep-out zones, and PCB masking techniques.
Familiarity with chemical handling, MSDS requirements, and PPE use.
Basic computer skills (Excel, Word, Outlook).
Effective communication skills in English, written and verbal.
