Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor

Job Summary
This position performs professional specialized recreation work in the coordination, implementation, supervision, administration, and evaluation of community recreation programs for persons with disabilities. Duties include the supervision of part-time therapeutic recreation leaders and volunteers. Work is assigned by the Deputy Director of Parks & Recreation.

Plans and directs an expanding and flexible adapted population program of recreation and leisure activities for populations with disabilities, by supervising, planning, and organizing all programs in conjunction with staff and volunteers.
Recruits, instructs, and trains staff and volunteers.
Provides support and technical assistance for inclusive parks and recreation programs.
Participates in the agency budget-making process and prepares an annual work program; recommends and justifies operational and budgetary improvements to facilities to enhance the programs for the special needs population.
Relates departmental regulations and policies for the programs and services.
Maintains and submits accurate financial, personnel, inventory, accident, and program service records to the deputy director.
Ensures that events and programs for persons with disabilities are promoted, working with county staff, to adequately provide information to the community.
Assists in the coordination of regularly scheduled special events and trips.
Investigates funding sources, and prepare grant proposals, applications, and reports to meet grant requirements.
Meets with the community (public schools, civic organizations, and parents) on an ongoing basis to foster goodwill toward programs for the special needs population, and to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and staff.
Serve as departmental representative to the ASPIRE community coalition.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the theory and philosophy of therapeutic recreation.
Knowledge of the principles, techniques, methodologies, and equipment employed when working with persons with disabilities.
Knowledge of public relations practices and principles.
Knowledge of departmental and county policies and procedures.
Ability to plan, promote, direct, supervise, and administer comprehensive recreation programs for persons with disabilities.
Ability to utilize the skills of professional, technical, and volunteer personnel in the community.
Ability to provide leadership for volunteers and staff.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, subordinates, volunteers, other employees, and the general public.
Ability to plan and maintain a safe environment.
Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to lift more than 60 pounds, unassisted.
Ability to see.

Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office and outdoors as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with a specialization in therapeutic recreation required.
2. Three years of experience in public recreation setting is preferred.
3. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       4. NRPA -Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Certification.
5. Valid Georgia driver’s license.
6. First-aid and CPR certifications are required.
7. CTRS certified or the ability to become certified within 6 months of hire.
8. CDL Preferred.
