Job Overview
This is work providing instructional support, training, and personal assistance to teachers of students in a transition program. The Teacher Assistant may be responsible for assisting students in specific programs. The Teacher Assistant works closely with the Transition teacher to collaborate on post-secondary planning and transition needs of students with IEPs, including career readiness, independent living skills, and community independence. The job assignment may be based in the community.
Roles and Responsibilities
The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate.
- Meets with students to discuss and explore transition related topics, including but not limited to transition assessments, workplace readiness and independent living skills, and postsecondary plans.
- Delivers direct support and structured training to students engaged in community and school-based work experiences, including assistance with travel training to promote independence and safety.
- Collaborates in the creation and implementation of individualized student work plans, ensuring appropriate accommodations, scheduling, transportation arrangements, and task analysis are effectively addressed.
- Provides instruction to promote student independence, gradually reducing support as skills are mastered.
- Develops visual aids to support student performance in community and work settings.
- Develops data collection tools and utilizes them to collect data and provide relevant information in regard to students needs.
- Provides support to students from other schools as needed.
Qualifications

Education
High school diploma or GED
Experience
Experience as a teacher aide or experience working with children
Licenses and Certifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to work under the supervision of the teacher, including following lesson plans prepared by teachers
- Ability to work effectively with individual children and small groups, meeting the instructional objectives as established by the teacher
- Physical ability to lift, position, and assist students as required
- Ability to accept and adapt to the wide differences in student characteristics and abilities
- Ability to operate standard office equipment, learn to operate video equipment, and learn to perform individual medical procedures when necessary
- Good human relations and communications skills; patience and flexibility
- Transports students utilizing LCPS vehicles
