What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sanitarian/Environmental Health position at Rock Island County Health Department?
With regular consultation with the Environmental Health supervisor, performs professional and technical work in environmental health program. Performs both field and office work for these programs including dissemination of public information and fostering improved community and environmental health. This position is full time with great benefits: health, vision, and dental insurance, vacation, personal, and sick time, holiday pay and IMRF. Starting wage is $24.75.
Essential duties and Responsibilities:
Reviews, plans and inspects facilities.
Completes activity reports and records of inspection, investigations, and correspondence.
Collects, under prescribed methods environmental samples of food, swimming pool water, etc. for analysis. Performs simple field tests.
Participates in making recommendations relative to the protection and disinfection of private water supplies and swimming pools.
Investigates and participates in recommending control programs for insect and rodent conditions.
Investigates and offers solutions involving possible sanitary violations. Makes follow-up inspections.
Explains state and local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations to the general public. Offers guidance on sanitation practices and principles, and advises clients regarding improvements or corrections necessary to assure compliance with applicable laws.

Qualifications & Requirements:
Education: BA with at least 30 semester hrs/45 quarter hrs in
And the physical or biological sciences OR
Experience: AA in the environmental sciences 2 yrs experience in
Environmental Health OR 30 semester hrs/45 quarter hrs of basic science 4
yrs experience in environmental health
Necessary Skills:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret information from scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents.
Interpersonal skills to respond to inquiries and complaints from the community.
Public speaking and presentation skills
Greet and converse with a variety of client personalities and cultures
Maintain client and department confidentiality
Solve problems with a minimum of assistance.
Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Other Requirements: Valid driver’s license
Physical Demands:
The employee frequently works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and fumes. The noise level is usually moderate. Employees must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
The employee frequently works in construction and undeveloped property zones.
The employee will use a soil probe and have to probe a minimum of five feet in a variety of soil conditions.
