General Definition of Work

The Engineering and Technology – Middle Level Teacher is responsible for providing engaging, hands-on instruction that develops students’ knowledge and skills in engineering, technology, robotics, design, problem-solving, and innovation. The teacher creates a safe, supportive, and collaborative learning environment where students can explore engineering concepts, apply the design process, use technology effectively, and develop solutions to real-world problems. The teacher will plan and deliver instruction aligned with state standards and district curriculum while providing opportunities for students to develop critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, and technical skills.

Essential Functions

• Plans and deliver standards-based instruction in engineering, technology, and related middle-level coursework appropriate for students’ developmental and academic needs.
• Provides hands-on learning experiences that allow students to explore engineering principles, technological systems, design processes, problem-solving strategies, and real-world applications.
• Guides students through the engineering design process, including identifying problems, researching solutions, developing designs, building prototypes, testing, evaluating, and improving solutions.
• Integrates technology, mathematics, science, and other appropriate content areas to support interdisciplinary learning and strengthen students’ understanding of STEAM concepts.
• Teaches students to safely and appropriately use classroom tools, equipment, technology, software, and other instructional resources.
• Establishes and maintains a safe, organized, productive laboratory, classroom, or makerspace environment.
• Develops and implements lessons that encourage creativity, innovation, critical thinking, collaboration, and independent problem-solving.
• Uses a variety of instructional strategies, materials, and technology to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
• Assesses student learning through formal and informal assessments and uses assessment results to adjust instruction and provide appropriate support or enrichment.
• Maintains accurate student records, grades, attendance, and other required documentation in accordance with district procedures.
• Provides timely and meaningful feedback to students regarding academic progress, projects, and performance.
• Establishes clear expectations for student behavior and maintains an environment conducive to learning.
• Communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents, colleagues, administrators, and community partners.
• Collaborate with teachers and other school personnel to support student achievement and provide meaningful interdisciplinary learning experiences.
• Encourages students to participate in STEAM-related activities, competitions, projects, career exploration, and other opportunities that promote interest in engineering and technology.
• Stays current with developments in engineering, technology, STEAM education, instructional practices, and industry-related applications.
• Participates in professional development activities and applies appropriate strategies and practices to improve instruction and student achievement.
• Follows all district policies, procedures, safety requirements, and applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or appropriate administrator.
• Communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, administrators, and community partners.
• Collaborate with other teachers and school personnel to integrate STEAM and technology across the curriculum.
• Maintain an organized, safe, and productive laboratory or classroom environment.
• Maintain and inventory instructional materials, robotics equipment, technology, tools, and supplies.
• Stay current with emerging technologies, robotics applications, engineering practices, and instructional strategies.
• Participate in professional development activities and implement strategies that support continuous improvement in instruction.
• Follow all district policies, procedures, safety requirements, and applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or appropriate administrator.

• Knowledge of engineering concepts, technology applications, STEAM education, and age-appropriate instructional practices.
• Knowledge of the engineering design process and the ability to apply it effectively in a middle-level learning environment.

• Ability to integrate technology and other STEAM disciplines into classroom instruction.
• Ability to operate and maintain instructional equipment and technology safely and effectively.

Certification and Experience

• South Carolina Middle Level certification with experience teaching robotics and engineering.
• Additional qualifications or certifications related to STEAM education, computer science, or career and technical education are desirable.
• Experience with differentiated instruction and inclusive teaching practices.
• Familiar with educational technology tools.
• Strong classroom management skills and a growth-oriented mindset.

Special Requirements

• Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
• May be required to travel to school district buildings and professional meetings.
• Prior to beginning employment, negative tb test results no older than one year must be provided.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

• Work requires long periods of standing or walking around the classroom, especially when giving instruction, monitoring students, or using whiteboards/projectors.
• Requires clear verbal communication and strong listening skills to engage with students, parents, and colleagues.
• May require projecting voice in noisy environments or large classrooms.
• Use of hands to write on boards, type, handle classroom materials, and operate technology (computers, tablets, projectors).
• May include lifting or carrying instructional materials, textbooks, or student work (typically up to 20 lbs.).
• Must be able to read and assess student work, view computer screens, and monitor student behavior visually.
• Must be able to hear student questions and school announcements.
• Repetitive actions like typing, grading papers, writing on boards.
• Often sit for extended periods while planning lessons or grading but also stand or move frequently while teaching.
• Work is primarily conducted indoors in classrooms, often with limited temperature control in older buildings.
• Exposure to chalk dust, markers, cleaning supplies, and sometimes poor ventilation.
• Classrooms can be noisy during group work.
• Standard school hours, but teachers often work before and after school for planning, grading, meetings, or extracurricular activities.
• Evening or weekend work is common for lesson prep, grading, parent communication, or professional development.
• Managing behavior, supporting diverse student needs, and maintaining classroom engagement.
• Breaks are limited and structured around school schedules (e.g., lunch, prep periods).
• Constant interaction with students, parents, administrators, and colleagues.
• Must manage interpersonal dynamics, conflicts, and communications in a professional and respectful way.

Application Requirements
Applicants must submit official transcripts, three professional references with at least one supervisory reference and a copy of the appropriate credentials as part of the application process.

Pre-Onboarding and Employment Requirements
As a condition of employment and prior to onboarding, the district will conduct a criminal history background check. The recommended candidate will be required to provide personal information necessary to complete the background check such as date of birth, gender, and race to remain in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. As part of the pre-employment process, candidates will be required to submit TB test results and complete designated employment tasks.
