This position is responsible for the repair and maintenance of large and complex equipment used in the daily operations of the Public Works Department. Work involves a combination of manual tasks and technical diagnosis of average complexity.
80% Service and repair a variety of vehicles and equipment such as single, tandem axle and four-wheel drive trucks; tractors and mowers; small to medium sized end loaders; asphalt rollers; tractor-trailer combinations; roadway maintainers; backhoes and various other types of road maintenance and construction equipment.
-Perform all work in a professional safe manner.

-Maintain clean safe work stations.
10% Submit accurate records of time and materials used in the performance of job duties.
-Time sheets.
-Repair parts and accessories.
-Update vehicle logs.
-Log on work done in the appropriate places.
5% Help develop personnel of lesser experience and/or training.
-Assist with on-the-job training for new mechanics.
5% Performs other duties as assigned.-Knowledge of the types and uses of common hand and power tools and standard equipment used in heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
-Knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely with and around mechanized construction and maintenance equipment.
-Ability to understand technical manuals and to carry out oral or written instructions with minimal supervision.
-Working knowledge of complex hydraulic and electronic systems; and the ability to perform repairs on gasoline and diesel engines of various sizes.
-Familiarity with various metal working techniques including drilling, grinding, cutting and welding.
-Possess good documentation skills and a comfort level with computerized work order tracking and inventory systems.
-Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays as required

- frequent working overhead, arms above head (lying on creepers, floor, ground, working under equipment
and or hoist, etc.)
- occasional push, pull up to 60 lbs. (large hyd. jacks, mounted tires, truck tailgates, large truck stands, etc.)
- frequent use of hand tools, gripping, twisting, striking (air hammers, drills, grinders, cutting torch, screw
drivers, wrenches, etc.)
- frequent visual acuity (reading electrical diagrams, ability to distinguish color coded wires, etc.)
- occasional equipment use, ability to drive and/or operate trucks, tractors, graders, end loaders, mowers,
chain saws, etc.
- frequent reaching out and over (working inside engine compartments, equipment cabs and equipment

- ability to work in extreme cold and hot, humid conditions for long periods of time

-High school graduation with additional vocational/technical training and three years relevant work experience in heavy equipment and truck maintenance and repair required, in addition to skills listed above.
-A Class "A" CDL must be obtained within 6 months after start date. Education and training will be provided to obtain the required Class “A” CDL in collaboration with Blackhawk Technical College. This opportunity requires a three year commitment of employment with Rock County Public Works.
-Must Possess and maintain a current unrestricted (not due to corrective lenses) driver's license and auto insurance pursuant to the Rock County Administrative Policy and Procedure Policy 5.02 and 5.27.
