Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations. Responsibilities: Responsible for high precision characterization of thin film samples using a broad suite of analytical instruments. Participates in the operation and maintenance of in-house characterization equipment and coordinates with external analytical service providers. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The Materials Characterization Technician will report to the Supervising Engineer in the Optical Manufacturing Group and duties include the following: Characterization measurements using a variety of analytical techniques including ellipsometry, optical and electron scanning microscopy, Raman scattering, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction Coordinate and submit samples for external analytical services such as Rutherford backscattering and secondary ion mass spectrometry Record measurement data accurately into spreadsheets, laboratory databases, and logbooks following established data management procedures Execute checklists and assist with procedure documentation Troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment and make simple repairs Support other coating chamber work such as bead-blasting panels as necessary Train and work with undergraduate students to test various optical materials MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE Associate's degree in materials science, optics, chemistry, physics, or mechanical technology and 3 years of relevant experience required Or equivalent combination of education and experience Previous experience working with analytical instruments preferred Previous experience working within a manufacturing environment preferred KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to manipulate heavy mechanisms and glass substrates required Willingness to interact with fellow technicians, research scientists, students, and vendors with a friendly and professional attitude required Good mechanical or hands-on laboratory skills preferred Strong organizational skills and the ability to document work and follow procedures preferred Basic understanding of computer hardware and software, including Microsoft Word and Excel The University of Rochester is committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving an inclusive and welcoming culture to advance the University’s Mission to Learn, Discover, Heal, Create – and Make the World Ever Better.
