Job Summary

A CNC programmer creates and refines computer-controlled programs that guide machinery to cut and shape materials according to design blueprints. This involves using to translate designs into machine code, setting up and troubleshooting CNC machines, and collaborating with engineers to ensure parts are produced accurately, efficiently, and to quality standards.

Position Responsibilities

  • Programming: Develop, test, and write CNC programs, using Mastercam to control machinery.
  • Analysis: Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and design specifications to determine machining requirements, tool selection, and optimal machine settings.
  • Optimization: Create and modify programs for maximum efficiency, accuracy, and productivity, and make manual adjustments as needed.
  • Troubleshooting: Monitor machine performance, conduct test runs, and troubleshoot problems during the manufacturing process.
  • Machine setup: Set up CNC mills and ensure proper handling of tools and materials . Installing and adjusting tools and fixtures, and calibrating machine parameters for precision and accuracy .
  • Testing and Quality Assurance: Conduct test runs (simulations) and initial part inspections to verify programs function correctly and products meet specifications, making adjustments as necessary.
  • Tooling and Material Selection: Choose appropriate cutting tools, materials, and workholding solutions (jigs, fixtures, vises) based on part requirements and material properties.
  • Testing and Quality Assurance: Conduct test runs (simulations) and initial part inspections to verify programs function correctly and products meet specifications, making adjustments as necessary.
  • Documentation and Collaboration: Document processes, write clear setup sheets for machine operators, and collaborate with engineers and other team members to ensure smooth production.

Qualifications

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education/Experience: A high school diploma or GED is required, with many employers preferring a technical or associate degree in CNC programming, machining, or a related field. An apprenticeship or several years of hands-on experience in a machine shop is highly valued. CNC Machining Certification and CNC Programming Certification are preferred.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in CAD/CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, SolidWorks, Autodesk Fusion 360).
    • Strong understanding of G-code and M-code programming languages.
    • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints and engineering drawings, including GD&T symbols.
    • Familiarity with various CNC machines (mills, lathes, routers) and their operational limits.
    • Experience using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, gauges).
    • Must be able to design cutting paths, tooling and tooling interface 5-axis on Mastercam and SolidWorks (CAD).
  • Soft Skills:
    • Excellent mathematical skills (including geometry and trigonometry).
    • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
    • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Good written and verbal communication skills for documentation and teamwork.
    • Mechanical aptitude and a commitment to safety protocols.
