GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The ELA Instructional Coach provides job-embedded professional learning to strengthen evidence-based reading and writing instruction, with a focus on improving outcomes for students performing below grade level. The coach builds teacher capacity through modeling research-based strategies, supporting standards-aligned lesson design, and guiding effective use of assessment data. Working collaboratively with teachers, the coach helps identify learning gaps, differentiate instruction, and implement targeted literacy interventions. Responsibilities also include facilitating PLCs, leading data cycles, and providing ongoing coaching through observation and feedback. This role supports Title I goals by increasing teacher effectiveness, promoting aligned instructional practices and MTSS implementation, and ensuring equitable access to high-quality literacy instruction-resulting in improved reading proficiency, stronger writing skills, and higher student achievement.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- S.C. certification in Middle Level Language Arts and/or Secondary English
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree
- Five years teaching experience preferred
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching of ELA/English.
- Have the experience or preparation that enables him or her to model, observe, and provide feedback about ELA instruction for classroom teachers.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Models effective instructional strategies for teachers.
- Facilitates study groups/team meetings.
- Trains teachers in data analysis and using data to differentiate instruction.
- Coaches and mentors colleagues.
- Provides daily support to classroom teachers.
- Works with teachers to ensure that research-based reading programs are implemented with fidelity.
- Helps lead and support ELA instruction at his or her school.
- Continues to increase his or her knowledge base in the best practices in ELA instruction, intervention, and remediation strategies.
- Works with all teachers (including content area, and elective areas) in the school he or she serves, prioritizing time for those teachers, activities, and roles that will have the greatest impact on student achievement, namely coaching and mentoring in classroom.
- Works with students in whole and small group instruction to supplement classroom learning.
- Participates and conducts professional development sessions at the school and district level.
- Participates as an integral member of the school’s intervention or other at-risk teams.
- Performs other duties as directed.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 190 days. Salary to be determined by the salary schedule established by the Board.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Principal and in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy.
