DEFINITION

To maintain District facilities for students, staff and public in safe operating condition; maintain a preventive maintenance program; perform skilled maintenance to resolve immediate operational and/or safety concerns.

The Maintenance Technician is scheduled to work 260 days and is considered non-exempt.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direct supervision from the Facilities Director.

Primary Duties

PRIMARY DUTIES--The following are examples of primary duties assigned to positions in this classification. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  • Operates a variety of equipment including snow removal equipment, power and hand tools and other specialized maintenance equipment; performs safety and maintenance inspections on assigned vehicle or equipment; performs routine vehicle and equipment repairs.
  • Installs system component parts, classroom and office equipment, playground equipment and facility components (e.g. lighting, plumbing, security, electrical panels, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and workable environment.
  • Performs general painting tasks; clean, sand, seal, and prepare interior and exterior walls and other surfaces for painting; paint walls, ceilings, trimwork, and other surfaces using rollers, brush, or power sprayers.
  • Performs general plumbing tasks; install and make emergency repairs and adjustments to plumbing fixtures and equipment, including pipes, washers and gaskets, faucets, floats, and valves; clean and repair drain lines.
  • Performs general electrical work; install and make routine repairs to electrical wiring, switches, outlets, fixtures, conduits, and motors; install and repair light ballasts; repair shop tools and custodial equipment.
  • Performs "troubleshooting" of malfunctioning or inoperative equipment.
  • May assist HVAC staff in the installation of heating and cooling systems. Assist in cleaning unit coils, filter change outs not limited to replacing belts.
  • May be assigned to prepare and cut keys; repair or install miscellaneous door hardware and lockers; service and maintain locks and; prepare, refit, hang or rehang doors.
  • May perform general carpentry tasks.
  • Reports to work on time and accurately record time worked; may need to adjust work schedule due to emergencies or other work related projects; work overtime as needed.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the Facilities Department by performing all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Hand tools, vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment, power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner

Methods, materials, test equipment, practices and skills used in the repair

Hand and power tools used in the trade area

Building plans and technical materials

Part and supplies necessary for the various jobs assigned

Preventive maintenance principles and practices

Ability To

Order required parts and supplies

Perform heavy manual labor in unfavorable weather conditions.

Read and interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints, technical materials and plans

Follow safety regulations

Estimate time and materials for various jobs and prepare completion reports

Use tools and power equipment skillfully

Maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the performance of required duties

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing

Interpret, apply and explain district regulations, policies and procedures

Operate a computer and assigned software

Work irregular hours

Work independently in the absence of supervision

Meet schedules and timelines

Experience And Training Guidelines

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience

Two years of increasingly responsible facilities maintenance experience.

Training

Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

Required safety training to be completed within the first year.

License Or Certificate

Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain an appropriate, valid driver's license.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental Conditions

Office and field environment; travel from site to site; work or inspect underground and in or with water and wastewater; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, inclement weather conditions; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders, work or inspect around heavy construction equipment.

Physical Conditions

Primary functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for heavy or moderate lifting up to 50 lbs; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, climbing, standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.

SALARY RANGE AND DAYS WORKED

Hourly range: $24.79 to $31.27/hour, depending on qualified experience

Days worked: 260 days/year (with paid personal time, paid vacation days, and paid time off for holidays and district non-work days such as during winter break and spring breaks)
