GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Under direction of the school principal, plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students. Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. Supervises students in a variety of school related settings. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes. Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff, and community. Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
ESSENTIAL TASKS
Develops and implements a program to provide students with relevant academic and career skills to successfully acquire college credit for a postsecondary environment and/or for an entry-level employment position. Demonstrates an accurate knowledge of cosmetology and effectively addresses appropriate CTE VDOE curriculum standards. Monitors and manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement on a regular basis, and modifies instruction as required. Develops in each student awareness and understanding of basic skills, knowledge and resources applicable to the hair industry. Maintains an active leadership student organization, SkillsUSA. Instills in each student effective safe working habits, the importance of continuation of his/her education and the development of successful work ethics. Meets and instructs
assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated providing individual and group instruction. Follows and maintains updated program competency-based-task list for each student as required by Virginia Department of Education. Provides and monitors an updated program inventory list required by law, school division policy and administrative regulations. Prepares and implement active learning practices and differential instructional strategies through weekly lesson plans. Provides and maintains student progress or assessment through data. Ensures proper setup and storage of program resources. Participates in professional organization related to program of study. Seeks and develops business/community resources to enhance curriculum. Advertises program and recruits students. Complies with and enforces school rules, administrative regulations and Board policies. Attends and participates in faculty meetings and other professional meetings as required. Coordinates relevant work based learning opportunities for students. Cooperates and collaborates with other members of the staff to plan instructional goals, objectives and methods. Completes reasonable special assignments as determined by the Principal and assists the school administration. Provides long and short range professional development goals and plans through program of study. Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must be able to review, revise and develop curriculum to meet industry demands, Virginia Cosmetology State Board and Virginia Department of Education standards. Must have the knowledge and experience of systematically planning, executing, evaluating individual, group instruction, effective organization and management of laboratory instruction. Must understand the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development of the age group in the program. Must be able to prepare students for work-based learning environments and student organizational leadership opportunities. Excellent communications, planning, organizational, and public relations skills and ability to work independently with minimum supervision are required. Must have the ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships and work in a cooperative and collaborative manner with administrators, supervisors, co-workers, parents and business/community stakeholders. Must be knowledgeable of creative, innovative, nontraditional teaching strategies that have proven successful with students from diverse backgrounds and performing at different academic levels. Some computer skills with Microsoft Word, Internet and Intranet access are required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Must hold or be eligible for a Technical Professional License and/or Collegiate Professional License with endorsement in cosmetology. Must have a cosmetology Virginia State Board License. Additional Barbering Virginia State Board license is preferred but optional. Must be highly competent in all areas of cosmetology with at least two years or 4,000 clock hours of experience within the past five years. A minimum of two years teaching cosmetology or science related area in a school setting school system is preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
