What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller - Engineer Firm position at RMG-Rocky Mountain Group?
Company Overview
RMG Engineers is a dedicated team of 47 employee-owners with over three decades of experience in engineering, architecture, and materials testing. We prioritize integrity, exceptional work, and a people-centric culture rooted in honesty and problem-solving.
Summary
We're seeking a Controller who is ready to take ownership of our financial systems, lead organizational clean-up, and drive modernization across the company's accounting and financial operations. This is not a maintenance role — it's a leadership opportunity for someone who thrives in fixing what's broken, implementing what's missing, and building a foundation for long-term success.
This pivotal role will oversee financial operations, ensure compliance with industry standards, and support our company's mission of excellence and integrity. The Controller will be hybrid-remote based in our Windsor office and play a key part in maintaining our financial health and organizational values.
Work Environment: Hybrid Remote
The candidate for this position must live in the state of Colorado. This position is based out of our Windsor, CO office and operates on a hybrid schedule — typically 2–3 days per week remote and the remaining days onsite for collaboration and meetings. As systems, processes, and operations stabilize, additional remote flexibility will be available.
Responsibilities
- Take full ownership of RMG's accounting operations and financial reporting.
- Lead process improvement and financial clean-up efforts across all accounting areas — including payroll, tax filings, reconciliations, and reporting accuracy.
- Modernize systems and processes — identify inefficiencies, propose solutions, and lead implementation of new tools and workflows.
- Revise, develop, document, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Prepare, review, and analyze monthly financial statements to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
- Oversee all general ledger functions, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and cash management.
- Collaborate closely with the CEO, COO, and HR to align financial operations with company strategy.
- Manage relationships with external partners, including tax preparers, auditors, and vendors.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership on financial strategy, forecasting, and decision-making.
- Implement new accounting software.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA preferred but not required).
- Minimum of 8–10 years of accounting experience, including at least 3–5 years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role.
- Proven success leading financial clean-up and process improvement initiatives — this is critical.
- Deep understanding of GAAP, compliance, and internal control best practices.
- Strong systems background — ability to assess and implement accounting software solutions.
- A leadership mindset with the confidence and authority to make decisions and drive change.
- Hands-on, detail-oriented, and willing to roll up your sleeves while still thinking strategically.
This is a rare opportunity to step into a leadership role with full authority to rebuild, modernize, and streamline. You'll have the support of an executive team that recognizes the need for change and is ready to give you the space, tools, and trust to make it happen.
We offer a competitive salary, employer paid health insurance, a collaborative leadership team, and the chance to make a lasting impact on a company that's positioning itself for growth and sustainability.
