Job Summary
The Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy construction equipment in the field to ensure optimal performance and safety.
Essential Duties:
- Perform advanced troubleshooting and diagnostics on hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
- Conduct preventive maintenance and emergency repairs on excavators, bulldozers, loaders, and other heavy machinery.
- Utilize OEM service manuals and electronic diagnostic tools for accurate repairs.
- Maintain detailed service records and ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Provide technical support and training to operators on proper equipment use.
- Support other operational tasks as needed.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs and perform physical tasks such as walking, squatting, reaching, pushing, and pulling for extended periods.
- Valid DL and clean driving record required
Technical Skills
- Hydraulic Systems:
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic pumps, valves, cylinders, and hoses.
- Knowledge of load-sensing and pressure-compensated systems.
- Electrical Systems:
- Troubleshoot wiring harnesses, sensors, alternators, and starters.
- Proficiency in reading electrical schematics and using multimeters.
- Diesel Engines:
- Overhaul and repair diesel engines, fuel injection systems, and turbochargers.
- Familiarity with emissions systems and DEF technology.
- Powertrain & Drivetrain:
- Service transmissions, torque converters, and final drives.
- Knowledge of track and undercarriage systems.
- Diagnostic Tools:
- Experience with computerized diagnostic software (e.g., CAT ET, Komatsu Komtrax, John Deere Service Advisor).
- Ability to interpret fault codes and perform calibrations.
- Fabrication & Welding:
- MIG and stick welding for structural repairs.
- Cutting and shaping metal components for field fixes.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Understanding of OSHA standards and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Ability to conduct risk assessments before repairs.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in heavy equipment maintenance.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to work independently in field conditions.
- Valid DL and clean driving record required.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish is helpful.
Safety/Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lb alone or more with assistance.
- Position requires constant walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, lifting, squatting, bending, and use of power tools.
- This position is primarily field-based (travel to job sites required). Exposure to noise, moving mechanical parts, and varying weather conditions should be expected.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- A combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
Reports to: Fleet Services Division Manager
Pay Rate: $65,000.00 $110,000.00
Classification: Non-Exempt, In Person, Full Time
Supervisory: This is a non supervisory role.
