Community Resource and Prevention Educator

Summary:

Applicant must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Associate’s degree in Health Education, Social Work, Behavioral Health, Human Services or related field preferred.  A minimum of two (2) years of experience supporting individuals and families who may require mental health, substance use prevention, or related community services is required. A minimum of one (1) year of experience conducting public speaking engagements, educational presentations, or community outreach presentations required. Experience working with individuals in need of behavioral health services preferred. Experience working with Native American communities or other culturally diverse populations, including advocating for underserved communities seeking access to mental health and substance use services, preferred. Applicant must have the ability to coordinates prevention programs, community activities, cultural workshops, and education on mental health and substance use services.Must have the knowledge of Native American culture and traditions, Mental health and substance use issues affecting individuals and families. Community resources and appropriate referral practices. Applicant must be available to work weekend and evening schedules, as these may be required based on operational needs. Must possess a valid California Driver’s License with a safe driving record; DMV record is required. Must have a CPR (BLS Provider) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross. Certification may be obtained prior to orientation. The Community Resource and Prevention (CRP) Educator is responsible for researching, developing, marketing, and conducting skill-based educational classes related to mental health, substance use prevention, domestic violence prevention and overall wellness. This position also provides assistance and support for special events and other CRP services. The incumbent must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends, as necessary to meet grant requirements and program guidelines. This position is funded by a Grant.  Must be able to work with the Indian community and be sensitive to the Indian culture and its needs.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs prevention and education activities related to mental health, substance use prevention, and domestic violence prevention, suicide awareness, and other grant-funded initiatives by:

• Assuming responsibility for an assigned caseload of patients/participants
• Interviewing, evaluating, and making appropriate program recommendations including access and linkage to services.
• Conducting individual and group presentations related to mental health, substance use prevention, domestic violence prevention and overall wellness.
• Maintaining and updating Behavioral Health Services and 211 Community Resource information.
• Prepares all data reports required by grant contracts including monthly, semi-annual, and annual reports. Submit all documents in a timely manner to NARC Program Coordinator for review and documents to be submitted by Program Coordinator.
• Maintains a centralized file of grant required documents and RSBCIHI required documentation.
• Ensuring that all required documentation, consent, and sign-in sheets are completed prior to the start of programs or presentations, as required by grant guidelines.
• Orienting patients, participants, and families to program services and schedules.
• Providing mental health and substance abuse interventions through appropriate access, referral, and linkage services.
• Attend any required training to meet contract requirements.  These courses may include: SafeTALK Mental Health First Aid, Question Persuade, Refer (QPR), Narcan training, Medtrainers and any other trainings necessary to meet RSBCIHI requirements.

Works closely with interdisciplinary staff to support continuity of care by:

• Participating in quality assurance activities as assigned.
• Attend BHS grant training opportunities to learn about services available for participants and other county resources.
• Providing and receiving recommendations regarding ongoing patient care and service delivery.

Maintains and models effective working relationship with referral sources and community agencies by:

• Attending county monthly subcommittee meetings to support networking, collaboration, and service coordination.
• Meeting with Native American communities and other underserved populations (African American, LGBTQ etc.) to ensure appropriate resources and services are available, consistent with grant requirements.
• stablishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with community partners and stakeholders.

Coordinates the RSBCIHI mental health and substance use prevention and early intervention program by:

• Creating a safe and welcoming environment for participants.
• Developing mental health and substance use prevention program with wellness activities that addresses the unique needs of Native American and other underserved populations.
• Developing wellness classes that educate and support individuals and families.
• Conducting ongoing community outreach, needs assessments, and outcome tracking related to service delivery. Collaborating closely with RSBCIHI departments and external agencies to promote wellness and prevention and early intervention services.
• This position requires working weekends and evenings, if needed.
•  Other duties assigned relevant to the position, with relevant training and competency assessment documented.

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent.   
Associate’s degree in Health Education, Social Work, Behavioral Health, Human Services or related field preferred.  

Experience:

Knowledge of:  

Mental health and substance use issues affecting individuals and families. Community resources and appropriate referral practices. Must have the knowledge of Native American culture and traditions. 

Skill:

Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.  Ability to establish effective working relationships with patients, families, staff, and community partners. Must understand or be willing to receive Native American cultural competency training and other underserved populations if required by funded contract and employ cultural awareness with our Native American community and other underserved populations

Certification: 

Valid CPR (BLS Provider) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross. Certification may be obtained prior to orientation.

License:                                  

A valid California driver’s license, current DMV printout, and safe driving record. Must be insurable by the program’s insurance carrier.

Ability to: 

Coordinate and implement comprehensive prevention and early intervention programs. Plan and facilitate safe recreational and wellness activities in a drug-free environment, the ability to coordinate events and activities with community organizations and partner agencies.  Guide and facilitate participants in traditional cultural activities, including beading, rattle-making, artwork, talking circles and other traditional crafts.  Raise awareness of how to access mental health and substance use services. Work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate program needs and community availability. 

Must be able to work with the Indian Community, and be sensitive to the Indian culture and its needs.

Physical Demands:

The position requires that the incumbent be physically capable of participating and instructing recreational activities which may require strenuous physical activity. Examples include setting up tables, canopies (EZ-ups), and event equipment. Loading, unloading, and transporting supplies and materials. Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and carrying items.  Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Telework Eligibility:
This position is eligible for hybrid telework upon successful completion of 90-day introductory period, Eligibility is subject to supervisor approval, position requirements, and organizational needs.

Compensation:

$21.00 per hour ($43,680 annually)
