SUMMARY
To provide engaging, project based lessons that integrate Computer Science Standards of Learning with the 5 C’s of creativity, communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and citizenship. This position is also responsible for integrating interdisciplinary STEAM activities/experiences into the Innovation Lab curriculum.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Reliable attendance and prompt arrival time;
- Prepares course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of state and school;
- Lectures, demonstrates, and uses audiovisual teaching aids to present subject matter to class;
- Prepares, administers, and corrects tests, and records results;
- Assigns lessons, corrects papers, and hears oral presentations;
- Maintains order in classroom and on playground;
- Maintains a safe environment for children at all times;
- Counsels students when adjustment and academic problems arise;
- Discusses students’ academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements with parents;
- Keeps attendance and grade records as required by school and division;
- Works cooperatively with the total staff;
- Assumes responsibility for the care of materials, equipment, and facilities;
- Develops instructional plans in order to integrate STEAM learning experiences that are age-appropriate, student-centered and aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning for Core Content, Computer Science and the Standards for Digital Literacy Integration.
- Plan, deliver, and assess quality STEAM learning experiences to include project-based learning and engineering design practices to students in PK-5.
- Identify, select, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and instructional needs.
- Collaborate with core teachers on the integration of Computer Science integration and Digital Learning Integration standards within core content.
- Attend professional development and training related to Computer Science, Digital Learning Integration, and STEAM programs, methodologies, and initiatives staying abreast of current research.
- Maintain an inventory of materials and equipment to support the collection and organization of supplies necessary for teaching in the Innovation Lab setting.
- Adhere to policies and regulations as outlined in federal and state laws and School Board Policies and Procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Computer Science Endorsement preferred. Knowledge of Computer Science content standards, effective instructional strategies, and assessment driven instruction. Experience with STEAM and/or project based learning lessons to students in grades PK-5. Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively through written or verbal methods with parents, students, teachers, administrators and the school community.
Education and/or Experience
- Master’s Degree preferred; Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year accredited college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must hold or be eligible to hold a valid Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in Elementary Education.
- Prior teaching experience at the elementary level is preferred.
- Experience or additional endorsements in the area of Computer Science preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid certification to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned. Applicant who has had teaching experience must have an acceptable rating for such teaching.
