Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Community Services Coordinator, the Recreation Specialist coordinates the day-to-day operations of City recreation programs and activities. This position helps ensure quality recreational experiences for participants while promoting a positive image of Riverdale City within the community.
The Recreation Specialist may also provide guidance and oversight to part-time staff and volunteers as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinate and support City recreation programs and activities.
- Assist with the planning, organization, and implementation of community recreation services.
- Promote positive public relations and maintain a favorable image of Riverdale City.
- Monitor, maintain, and control the use of recreation equipment and supplies.
- Assist with the City's annual Old Glory Days Celebration and other special events.
- Collaborate effectively with City staff, volunteers, community partners, and participants.
- Provide excellent customer service to residents and program participants.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience performing recreation, community services, event coordination, or closely related duties; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Recreation program development and administration.
- Rules and regulations associated with various sports and recreational activities.
- Personal computers and common software applications, including:
- Microsoft Word
- Spreadsheets
- General office software programs
Ability to:
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, community organizations, participants, and the public.
- Work effectively with individuals from a variety of age groups and backgrounds.
- Communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.
- Manage multiple tasks and priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Demonstrate sound judgment, initiative, and problem-solving skills.
Special Qualifications
- Valid driver's license preferred.
Work Environment
This position works in both office and outdoor environments. Duties require a variety of physical activities, including:
- Walking
- Standing
- Sitting
- Reaching
- Stooping
- Light lifting
Successful performance requires effective communication, visual observation, hearing, attention to detail, and sound judgment. The position also requires frequent local travel as part of normal job responsibilities.
