JOB SUMMARY

Under direct supervision of designated administrator, specific certificated staff members and/or director of Student Services, performs the necessary duties in the planning and implementation of a program for special needs, severely handicapped, disabled students and the integration with other regular education students. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and Application of: District policies and procedures as they apply; Operation of a variety of office machines used in a modern office environment; Record keeping techniques; Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; Oral and written communication skills; Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; Child growth and development principles; Behavioral management strategies; Understanding of Special Education population; Understanding and knowledge of development of children between ages of two (2) and six (6); Applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws. Demonstrated oral and written literacy in Spanish highly desirable.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION


May include, but not limited responsibilities to:  

  • Assist in planning, implementation and evaluation of individual student programs.

  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of instruction materials.

  • Assist in classroom control by supervising small groups and/or individual pupils to promote the learning process.

  • Assist in the supervision of students at assigned tasks in and out of the classroom.

  • Assist in the observation and recording of student development and progress.

  • Assist with learning centers such as: gathering and preparing materials, setting up the center, providing instructional assistance and cleaning up.

  • Assist in preparing, monitoring and cleaning up facilities.

  • Assist in performing classroom administrative duties such as: completing absence reports and enrollment records, correcting papers or workbooks, charting pupil progress, requisitioning materials, duplicating, inventorying records, and filing.

  • Participate in appropriate meetings. 

  • Operate orthopedic equipment and machines necessary to program operation but not limited to; i.e., stander, walker, wheelchairs, communication and learning devices, scooter boards, and support board wedges

  • Participate in parent in-service education. 

  • Assist with physical and hygiene needs and training of the students in the individualized education program; i.e., toilet training, lifting and behavior management.

  • Administer, score, and record such achievement and diagnostic tests as the teacher recommends for individual students.

  • Assist in other pupil learning and improvement activities.

  • Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing materials or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interest and abilities.

  • May supervise yard and community-based activities.

  • Notify parents/teachers of IEP (Individual Educational Plan) meetings.

  • Other IEP forms

  • Serve as chief sources of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.

  • Other related duties as assigned

Ability to:

  • Effectively communicate orally and in writing

  • Speak and write English clearly and correctly

  • Speak, read and write in Spanish is desirable

  • Communicate effectively with parents in a sensitive manner

  • Initiative, good judgment, tact, patience and confidentiality

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, students, parents and others

  • Work with behaviorally-disordered children

  • Meet schedules and deadlines

  • Plan and organize; utilize time management and organization skills

  • Visual acuity sufficient to read, write and work with printed information as well as information on a computer terminal

  • Effectively operate computers and office machines

  • Perform clerical work

  • See for purposes or reading printed matter and observing students

  • Auditory acuity sufficient to effectively understand information from others in person and over the telephone

  • Ability to speak clearly with the ability to be heard and understood on the telephone and in work site conversations

  • Communicate with students who may have a wide range of communication skills

  • Lift, carry, push or pull objects which may frequently exceed 50 pounds

  • Perform light physical exertion

  • Sufficient dexterity to manipulate small objects and print and write legibly

  • Sufficient physical ability to reach in all directions with arms

  • Sufficient depth perception to file and retrieve documents

  • Stand, sit and walk, stretch, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, run, crawl, balance without restrictions for extended periods of time

  • Work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations

  • Read, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education

  • High School diploma or GED required 

  • AA Degree or Verifiable Two (2) years post-secondary education required

  • Must meet federal, state and local competency requirements

Experience:

  • Advanced education/coursework and/or training in the implementation of instructional methodologies, child development, student assessment, etc. desirable

  • One (1) year experience in providing various methods of instruction, including direct instruction, in an education environment desirable

  • Recent experience working with children or youth groups is desirable
