Custodian

As a part of River Valley Church’s staff, the Custodian conducts janitorial and custodial maintenance and cleaning tasks required ensuring the cleanliness, sanitation and safety of the church’s facilities along with room setups.

Hours: This position is part time, and it is 20 hours per week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Custodian is required to perform a range of duties including, but not limited to:

• Performs daily and periodic floor cleaning and vacuuming tasks in areas having carpet, resilient tile, quarry tile, concrete and wood using hand and powered cleaning devices.
• Dust and clean vertical and horizontal surfaces, including but not limited to masonry, fabric, upholstered furniture, glass, windows, walls, doors/hardware, hard surfaces, wood and plastic laminate desks, counter and work surfaces, play and nursery areas. Cleans and sanitizes toilet rooms, fixtures and kitchen facilities.
• Selects and uses cleaning materials and equipment appropriate to each specific task and condition (as defined by the Lead Facilities Manager) and ensures safe and effective application in accordance with label and product data sheets instruction and warnings. Uses appropriate clothing and equipment to meet health and safety standards.
• Removes and disposes of routine building waste and trash including proper disposal of confidential waste.
• Monitors security of building while performing janitorial duties and secures building when leaving by checking and securing systems, doors and windows. Open and closing the building as scheduled along with the arming and disarming of alarm systems.
• Performs both routine and specialized support tasks, including moving furniture and equipment for room set-ups and relocations including construction and renovation project clean-ups
• Performs routine and specialized grounds maintenance tasks using hand and powered equipment in performance of snow removal and ice control.
• Works with others in a team environment, accepts direction from supervisor or lead, follows standard cleaning procedures.
• May be assigned role of opening and closing building, setting room thermostats, restocking supplies, change monitor schedule, restock cleaning supplies,
• Performing light maintenance including, but not limited to changing light bulbs, or light special projects.
• Ensuring outside perimeter cleanliness

Qualifications

Ability to comprehend housekeeping procedures. Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions. Ability to provide customer service in a professional manner. Must be able to report to work on a regular and timely basis. Must possess problem solving skills, be self-motivated, and able to work alone.
  
• Physical Demands: Work is performed 95% inside the building and 5% outside the building. The position will require frequent lifting requirements of up to 50 pounds with or without assistance. Exposures may include cleaning chemicals, water treatment chemicals, seasonal temperature extremes, and, occasionally, bodily fluids, infectious diseases and hazardous waste or material. Must frequently perform the following motions: walking, bending, squatting, turning/twisting, kneeling, climbing, reaching out, reaching up, grasping, wrist turning and finger manipulation.
  

Education

High school graduate with at least one year of relevant custodial experience or completion of training in building cleaning techniques from a technical or recognized institution.

Experience

Successful candidate should have at least 1 year related experience.
