Job Details: River Town Racers Summer Camp Counselor – Sprint Kayak
River Town Racers is seeking enthusiastic and responsible Summer Camp Counselors to lead and supervise youth in sprint kayaking activities while ensuring their safety and fostering a fun, positive camp experience. This position focuses exclusively on sprint kayaking and may involve additional responsibilities on the water.
Camp Dates & Hours (2026):
- Session 1: June 22 – June 26, 12:00 PM – 4:30 PM
- Session 2: July 6 – July 10, 12:00 PM – 4:30 PM
Additional hours may be available depending on interest and the ability to learn sprint kayaking techniques.
Pay: Part-time, hourly at $24.00/hour.
Requirements:
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Availability for both scheduled camp sessions.
- Willingness to participate in on-dock and on-the-water training prior to the first session.
Camp Staff Structure
Each session accepts approximately six campers, ages 11 to 17. In addition to the lead counselor, Junior Camp Counselors—who are members of the River Town Racers sprint kayak team—may also assist with camp activities. Junior counselors help support campers and staff both on and off the water.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Sprint Kayaking Activities: Teach campers paddling techniques, water safety, and navigation specific to sprint kayaking.
- Supervise Campers: Ensure the safety and well-being of campers during all on-water and camp activities.
- Assist with Rescue Operations: Learn to aid in rescues from the motor boat launch under supervision.
- Foster a Positive Environment: Create a fun, inclusive, and encouraging atmosphere for all campers.
- Enforce Safety Rules: Ensure campers adhere to all water and camp safety protocols.
- Manage Equipment: Assist with setup, maintenance, and proper use of sprint kayaks and safety gear.
- Coordinate with Junior Counselors: Work collaboratively with junior camp counselors who help support camp activities.
- Communicate Effectively: Maintain clear and professional communication with campers, parents, and camp staff.
- Role Model Leadership: Demonstrate positive behavior, teamwork, and leadership for campers.
Skills & Qualifications
- Sprint Kayaking Experience: Demonstrated paddling ability or willingness to learn sprint kayaking.
- Experience with Youth: Experience working with children or teens in a group setting.
- Safety Awareness: Understanding of water safety and ability to respond calmly in emergencies.
- Physical Fitness: Ability to participate in and supervise physically active outdoor activities.
- Certifications: Current First Aid and CPR certification preferred; training may be provided if needed.
- Enthusiasm & Leadership: Positive, energetic attitude with the ability to motivate and guide campers.
- Communication & Problem Solving: Ability to communicate clearly and handle minor conflicts or issues effectively.
