Recreation Therapist

River Park provides acute inpatient services to children, adolescents, adults and seniors and features a 22-bed residential treatment program for children and adolescents and a 25-bed adult forensic unit. River Park Hospital is seeking a dynamic and talented Recreation Therapist to join our team of compassionate, dedicated professionals . The Recreation Therapist will be responsible for designing and initiating appropriate leisure and recreation activities as therapeutic interventions to improve the physical, mental and emotional well-being of the patients. Therapeutic services include, but are not limited to expressive arts (art, music, dance), therapeutic recreation (adapted sports, exercise, games, therapeutic play), mind-body techniques (relaxation, stress management, anger management, cognitive stimulation), community integration, and other recreational programs.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

• Provides and implements a recreational assessment on each patient
• Provides an assortment of leisure activities
• Assists patients in developing an understanding of benefits of ongoing health and fitness. Assists patients to improve social interaction, coping skills, problem solving skills, anger management skills, and any skills that relates to address the functioning of the human domains to increase overall quality of life.
• Assists with the coordination and execution of community integration outings that promote skills including social interaction, critical thinking skills, time management, money management, and any other skills that are instrumental to integrate patients into the community and assist with discharge readiness. Utilize company vehicle to transport patients for outings with additional staff members.
• Works with treatment team to develop and implement therapeutic recreation programs
• Maintains recreational areas and equipment
• Completes documentation accurately and timely
• Maintains observation of patients and shares appropriate information with manager. Other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications: Education, Certification/Licensure, and/or Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation or a related field to Therapeutic Recreation such as music, art, dance and movement, theatre, or exercise science and a minimum of one year working in the mental health field or five years of experience as a Recreation Therapist or Mental Health Technician for external candidates.
• MHT II with a Bachelor’s Degree for internal candidates.
• CTRS certification preferred but not required. Those with CTRS certification may be assigned specialized or additional responsibilities commensurate with any salary differential.
• Knowledge, skills, and abilities required
• Knowledge of variety of recreational activities
• Must possess ability and willingness to work professionally and effectively with staff, medical staff, patients, family members, administration and others.
• Ability to complete documentation that is consistent with policy and good clinical practice.
