The School Guardian (Armed) is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly environment for students, staff, and visitors across the school campus. This position provides a visible security presence, monitors access control, supports emergency preparedness, and assists administration during safety-related incidents. The School Guardian is not a law enforcement officer and does not perform law enforcement duties, but is authorized under Florida law and school policy to carry a firearm on campus after meeting all statutory and training requirements.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Campus Safety and Supervision

  • Maintain a visible security presence throughout the campus to promote safety and deter unsafe behavior.
  • Patrol school buildings, grounds, hallways, restrooms, cafeteria, parking areas, and common spaces.
  • Assist with student supervision during arrival, dismissal, class changes, lunch periods, and high-traffic times.
  • Provide security coverage during school events, extracurricular activities, and athletic events as assigned.

Access Control and Visitor Monitoring

  • Monitor entrances, exits, and campus perimeters to ensure access is limited to authorized individuals.
  • Support visitor check-in procedures and report unauthorized visitors to administration.
  • Assist with traffic flow and vehicle supervision during arrival and dismissal.

Emergency Response and Incident Support

  • Respond promptly to safety incidents and emergencies in accordance with school safety plans and protocols.
  • Assist administration during lockdowns, evacuations, drills, and other emergency procedures.
  • De-escalate conflicts and disturbances using approved techniques and professional judgment.
  • Coordinate with administration and, when directed, serve as a liaison with School Resource Officers and law enforcement.

Documentation and Professional Responsibilities

  • Observe, document, and report safety concerns, incidents, or suspicious activity to administration.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate incident reports and security logs.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and positive interactions with students, staff, families, and visitors.

Other Duties

  • Support inspection and reporting of safety equipment concerns (doors, gates, cameras, alarms, radios).
  • Assist with campus safety set-up and monitoring during special events when directed.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the administration.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Successful completion of Level 2 background screening as required by Florida law.
  • Successful completion of all Florida guardian program eligibility, screening, and training requirements, including firearm qualification.
  • Ability to remain calm, exercise sound judgment, and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in school security, military service, law enforcement support roles, or related fields.
  • Training in crisis response, de-escalation, or emergency management.
  • Experience working in an educational or youth-centered environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of school safety procedures and emergency protocols.
  • Ability to observe, assess, and report incidents accurately.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to de-escalate conflicts and maintain professional composure.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards.
  • Strong situational awareness and reliability.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

  • Work performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and ability to move quickly during emergencies.
  • May involve exposure to noise, crowds, traffic, and physical hazards typical of a school environment.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Reporting Relationships

  • Reports directly to the principal or designated administrator.

Terms of Employment

Full-time, 10-month position.

Salary and benefits consistent with the school’s approved compensation plan.

Continued employment is contingent upon maintaining all required guardian certifications, screenings, training, and firearm qualifications.
