About Refugee & Immigrant Voices in Action (RIVA)

Refugee & Immigrant Voices in Action (RIVA) strengthens Iowa communities by training emerging leaders from refugee and immigrant backgrounds to support their neighbors in accessing education, employment, and essential services. RIVA AmeriCorps members expand the capacity of local nonprofits and deliver culturally and linguistically appropriate support that increases economic self‑sufficiency and community integration.

About the Community Navigator Role

Community Navigators serve directly with refugee and immigrant families across Iowa, providing outreach, job‑readiness support, referrals, and wraparound services. Members partner with host sites to ensure clients have access to the tools they need to thrive—employment pathways, digital literacy, transportation, childcare, and social services.

This role is ideal for individuals passionate about community engagement, social justice, and supporting newcomers in building stable, successful lives.

Key ResponsibilitiesRIVA AmeriCorps Program Activities

  • Participate in RIVA training sessions, including orientation, monthly calls, service days, and Life After AmeriCorps
  • Serve collaboratively with staff, AmeriCorps members, volunteers, and community partners
  • Collect and report accurate weekly data using RIVA Impact tools
  • Engage in allowable AmeriCorps service activities that support program goals
  • Provide peer-to-peer support and contribute to program growth

Community Navigator Service Activities

Members will receive training during their first month on job readiness coaching, Northstar curriculum use, client intake, case management, community outreach, and RIVA data reporting.

Direct Client Support

  • Recruit and mentor at least 50 unduplicated non‑native English speakers using the Northstar Career Search Skill curriculum
  • Conduct client intake, needs assessments, and individualized service plans
  • Provide 1:1 or group support for job readiness, resume development, job search, and interview preparation
  • Deliver supportive services including housing, food security, healthcare navigation, translation, and referrals
  • Track attendance and direct service within 3 days of each interaction
  • Administer RIVA post‑tests after 8 hours of study and report results within one week
  • Conduct client feedback surveys and present compiled results to the supervisor
  • Create a program sustainability binder during the final month of service

Community Outreach & Event Support

  • Conduct multilingual outreach for the RIVA Summer Job Fair
  • Secure at least 10 community participants by May 15
  • Provide interpretation, translation, and documentation support at events
  • Recruit at least 2 volunteers for the Job Fair and track volunteer hours within 24 hours
  • Assist with event setup, cleanup, and post‑event feedback reporting

Service Schedule

Members serve Monday–Friday between 8 AM and 5 PM, with occasional evenings and weekends for special events.
Federal holiday service rules apply per AmeriCorps policy.
Sick and personal days are allowed, but hours missed do not count toward required service hours.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or working toward completion
  • At least 17 years old at the start of service
  • U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident
  • Must pass the National Service Criminal History Check
  • Respect for diverse cultures and commitment to social justice
  • Ability to communicate effectively; multilingual ability (Arabic, French, Swahili, Spanish) is a plus
  • Ability to serve flexible hours
  • Ability to use or learn basic computer skills for email, reporting, and documentation
  • Experience teaching or training adults is a plus
