Duties:
- Provide sign language interpretation services to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Interpret spoken language into sign language and vice versa in various settings, such as meetings, conferences, classrooms, and medical appointments
- Ensure accurate and effective communication between deaf or hard of hearing individuals and hearing individuals
- Adapt interpretation style and techniques to meet the needs of different individuals and situations
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional standards of conduct
Qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and knowledge of other sign language systems
- Certification from a recognized interpreting program or professional organization (e.g., RID certification)
- Strong understanding of deaf culture and sensitivity to the needs of deaf or hard of hearing individuals
- Excellent communication skills, both in sign language and spoken language
- Ability to quickly comprehend and accurately interpret complex information in real-time
- Flexibility to work in a variety of settings and adapt to different communication styles
- Professionalism, reliability, and punctuality in fulfilling interpreting assignments
Our American Sign Language (ASL) Paraeducator will assist certificated teaching staff, therapist, nurse, and other specialists in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of students assigned to special programs/services offered by Rising Star including classrooms serving students identified primarily as deaf or hard of hearing, intellectual disability, orthopedic impairment, autism, multi-disability, emotionally disturbed, specific learning disability and alternative education. Most positions are classroom-based but could be itinerant.
