We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Utility Supervisor to oversee daily operations within our Public Works. The ideal candidate will need a background in water, sewer, and gas knowledge.
Job Summary
The Utility Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of the Public Works Authority’s gas, water, and sewer systems. This position ensures safe and reliable service, coordinates repairs and capital projects, and maintains compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. The Utility Supervisor plays a critical role in protecting public health, safety, and infrastructure.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise, schedule, and direct utility personnel involved in gas, water, and sewer operations
- Oversee operation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of gas distribution, water treatment and distribution, and wastewater collection systems
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulations (including ODEQ, EPA, DOT/PHMSA, and state utility requirements)
- Respond to and coordinate emergency utility situations, including after-hours callouts
- Conduct routine system inspections and identify maintenance or infrastructure needs
- Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to utility operations and compliance
- Assist with budgeting, purchasing, inventory control, and capital improvement planning
- Coordinate with contractors, engineers, inspectors, and regulatory agencies
- Train staff on safety procedures, proper equipment use, and regulatory standards
- Promote and enforce workplace safety and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Communicate effectively with management, governing boards, and the public regarding utility issues
- Perform related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong working knowledge of gas, water, and wastewater utility systems
- Knowledge of applicable safety standards, codes, and regulations
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Ability to read and interpret plans, maps, and technical documents
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
- Proficiency with basic computer programs and utility recordkeeping systems
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in utility operations (gas, water, and/or sewer), including supervisory experience
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
Certifications and Licenses- Town will cover expenses for certifications
- State water and/or wastewater operator certification
- Gas utility certification or training (as applicable)
- OSHA safety training or equivalent
- Ability to obtain required certifications within a specified timeframe
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, lift, and work in confined spaces
- Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
- On-call availability for emergencies is required
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $18,000.00 - $36,000.00 per year
