Substitute nurses work alongside a health assistant to provide triage, basic first aid, management of chronic health conditions and emergency response to illnesses and injuries for school age children. Substitute nurses may have days scheduled in advance or unexpectedly on the morning of the need. Preference given to nurses that can provide at least two days a week availability. The casual hire nurse reports directly to the Director of Nursing.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelors in Nursing preferred. ADN accepted. At least one year of current nursing experience. Must hold a valid New Mexico Registered Nurse license issued by the New Mexico Board of Nursing or any successor licensing board for nurses or license from another state based on current compact state license. Must hold or be willing to acquire a School Nurse license through New Mexico Public Education Department.
Substitute School Nurse Pool
Hourly Rate: $55.00
This pool of applicants will be reviewed regularly. Those applying for this position will be considered for substitute nurse assignments on an as-need basis.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to identifying and reporting health problems that interfere with student learning through screening procedures, assessments, and evaluations of students; makes appropriate referrals based on data obtained from screenings; immunization compliance, medication administration, special nursing procedures.
Identifies and reports health problems that interfere with student learning through screening procedures, assessments, and evaluations of students; makes appropriate referrals based on data obtained from screenings; supervises students for self-administered medications; administers medication and specialized health care needs to students; implements health management plans with students who have special needs; implements policies and procedures regarding control of communicable diseases in accordance with regulations of the State of New Mexico Environment Department; assists administration in arranging emergency care and first aid for students and staff; arranges transportation for emergency medical care; authorizes exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infectious, contagious, and nuisance diseases; maintains current CPR certification; assists Principal in other health-related assignments; maintains communication and professional rapport with students, parents, and staff; performs other duties as assigned.
