Mechanical Design Engineer

Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design, development, and continuous improvement of precision mechanical components and assemblies. This role involves working in a high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environment, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams including Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain to ensure designs meet performance, manufacturability, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Design mechanical components and assemblies using 3D CAD software (Autodesk Inventor preferred)
- Develop detailed drawings in accordance with ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards
- Perform design calculations, tolerance stack-ups, and engineering analyses
- Support new product development from concept through production release
- Review and interpret customer specifications, including aerospace/defense requirements
- Generate and maintain Bills of Material (BOMs) and engineering documentation
- Work with manufacturing to optimize designs for manufacturability and cost
- Support root cause analysis and corrective actions for nonconforming products
- Participate in design reviews, FMEA activities, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Interface with suppliers for component development and technical support
- Collaboration with internal teams and external suppliers
- This role includes shop-floor collaboration and prototype validation.

Qualifications & Competencies:
- Work Authorization: Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Person as defined by ITAR
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 3 years of mechanical design experience in a manufacturing environment
- Proficiency in 3D CAD (Inventor, SolidWorks, or similar)
- Strong understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
- Experience creating detailed drawings and technical documentation
- Familiarity with machining, fabrication, and assembly processes
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in aerospace, defense, or regulated industries (AS9100 environment)
- Familiarity with gears, splines, rotating equipment, or power transmission systems
- Familiarity with brake and clutch systems
- Knowledge of materials, heat treatment, and surface finishes
- Experience with FEA tools and engineering analysis
- Understanding of FAI (First Article Inspection) and quality requirements
- Exposure to ERP/MRP systems
