Position Overview
The Project Engineer / Assistant Project Manager supports the successful delivery of commercial mechanical construction projects from preconstruction through closeout. This role works closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, field personnel, vendors, and clients to coordinate project activities, maintain schedules, manage documentation, and support the execution of HVAC and mechanical systems.
The ideal candidate has a Mechanical Engineering degree and experience working on commercial HVAC construction projects. Candidates with mechanical contracting experience involving HVAC, piping, sheet metal, controls coordination, or design-build delivery are highly preferred. This position offers a clear path toward Project Manager advancement.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Project Managers in overseeing commercial HVAC and mechanical construction projects from kickoff through project completion.
- Manage project documentation including RFIs, submittals, change orders, purchase orders, meeting minutes, and closeout documents.
- Coordinate with field teams, subcontractors, vendors, and clients to ensure project milestones are achieved.
- Review mechanical drawings, specifications, and contract documents to support project execution.
- Track procurement and delivery of HVAC equipment, ductwork, piping, controls, and long-lead materials.
- Assist with project budgeting, forecasting, job cost tracking, and financial reporting.
- Support scheduling efforts and maintain project logs, schedules, and progress reports.
- Participate in owner meetings, subcontractor meetings, and internal project coordination meetings.
- Assist with commissioning activities, startup coordination, and project turnover documentation.
- Coordinate with engineering and fabrication teams to ensure constructability and efficient project execution.
- Help identify and resolve project issues to maintain schedule, quality, and budget objectives.
- Support project closeout activities including punch lists, O&M manuals, warranties, and final turnover packages.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
- 2–5 years of experience in mechanical construction, HVAC project engineering, or project coordination.
- Experience working for a mechanical contractor strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems including:
- Chillers
- Boilers
- RTUs
- Air Handling Units
- VRF Systems
- Hydronic Systems
- Piping Systems
- Ductwork Systems
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical plans, specifications, and construction documents.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting healthcare, commercial, industrial, education, mission critical, or government projects.
- Familiarity with design-build project delivery.

- EIT certification or progress toward PE licensure is a plus.
- Exposure to fabrication, prefabrication, or sheet metal operations is preferred.
