Position Summary
The Traffic Control Supervisors (TCS) are responsible for overseeing the safe and effective setup, maintenance, and removal of temporary traffic control (TTC) zones for construction, utility, and special event projects. This role ensures all traffic control operations comply with local, state, and federal regulations—including MUTCD and DOT standards. The TCS acts as a field leader, coordinating with crews, clients, and agencies to maintain safety, traffic flow, and project timelines.
The Crew Lead Traffic Controller (“Crew Lead”) works with construction teams to ensure that vehicles and pedestrians do not interfere with, or pose a danger to, laborers and their projects. Candidates must be certified in basic traffic safety techniques and are required to have demonstrated proficiency as a Traffic Controller. The Crew Lead must create a safe work zone that ensures traffic does not cause a threat to the workers. This involves setting up cones and barriers that show traffic where to drive, as well as holding up signs that tell traffic to either stop or to proceed slowly. Crew Lead Traffic Controllers must constantly be aware of both the construction and traffic activity taking place around them. Compliance with all safety regulations is mandatory.

Responsibilities
- Be proficient in all Traffic Controller activities
- Setup, maintain, and remove temporary work zones including warning signs, and traffic cones, according to ATSSA and DOT regulations
- Load and unload work zone equipment to and from the company vehicle at the job site
- Complete and submit all necessary paperwork before leaving the last job site
- Wear and maintain proper PPE in accordance with Wright specific policy
- Ensure that company vehicles are kept clean and orderly and inform management of any safety concerns or vehicle problems
- Coordinate work operations with on-site foreman
- Review start time and address of job site or meeting location (if applicable) as established and sent by office scheduler via company app
- Drive the company vehicle in a safe manner when commuting to and from job sites, if employee chooses to use a company vehicle for commuting
- Read and understand Wright safety manual and employee handbook
- Reports to the Field Supervisor
- Other job duties as assigned
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record preferred (mandatory for employees who elect to use a company vehicle to commute)
- Must have a smartphone with internet access for timekeeping and communication to receive work schedule
- Excellent communication skills
- Be able to work in all weather conditions and tolerate varying climates of heat, cold, and rain
- Pass a drug screen prior to employment and maintain a drug free status
- Be able to stand throughout your entire shift, hand and arm movement is required
- The position does not allow for frequent breaks
- Be able to lift 50 pounds
- Be physically capable of performing all flagging duties
- Have reliable transportation to and from job sites. All employees are permitted to drive their own vehicles to the job site or assigned meeting location. Driving of, or riding with, crew members to and from the job site or assigned meeting location, whether in a personal or company vehicle, is voluntary carpooling for the convenience of the employees.
- Supervise the setup, operation, and removal of traffic control devices in accordance with approved traffic control plans (TCPs)
- Ensure work zones comply with MUTCD, DOT, and other applicable standards and permits
- Conduct pre-job site inspections and post-job evaluations for safety and quality assurance
- Direct and support field crews, including flaggers and traffic control technicians
- Interpret traffic control plans and make real-time decisions to adjust layouts for field conditions
- Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, contractors, inspectors, and enforcement personnel on-site
- Coordinate with dispatch, operations, and logistics teams to ensure timely job execution
- Provide daily updates to supervisors regarding crew performance, safety concerns, and project status
- Conduct tailgate safety meetings and enforce proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Identify and mitigate hazards in active work zones
- Complete required paperwork, including daily field reports, incident reports, and equipment checklists
- Maintain knowledge of current safety regulations, laws, and traffic control procedures
- Oversee the loading, transportation, setup, and maintenance of traffic control devices (cones, signs, arrow boards, crash trucks, etc.)
- Train, mentor, and evaluate crew members on proper traffic control procedures and safety protocols
- Report equipment needs, damages, or maintenance issues to yard or fleet management
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Valid Traffic Control Supervisor certification (state-specific, e.g., ATSSA or equivalent)
- 2 years of experience in traffic control or construction with at least 1 year in a leadership or supervisory role
- Valid driver’s license with a clean MVR; CDL preferred
- Ability to pass background check, drug screen, and DOT physical
- Strong understanding of MUTCD guidelines, state DOT standards, and local permit requirements
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and lift 50 lbs
- Field-based role with extensive outdoor work near live traffic
- Exposure to noise, dust, heat/cold, and varying terrain
- Fast-paced and safety-critical work environment
- Irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and on-call availability may be required
