Position Title: Van Monitor

Position Summary
The Van Monitor is responsible for assisting the Van Driver in ensuring the safety, supervision, and well-being of youth passengers with mental, emotional, and behavioral health challenges during transport. The Van Monitor provides behavioral support, enforces safety rules, and helps create a calm, structured environment while traveling to and from program activities, appointments, and schools.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and support youth passengers during transport to ensure a safe and positive environment.
- Assist the Van Driver with passenger loading and unloading, including seatbelt checks and accessibility needs.
- Maintain order and manage behaviors using agency-approved de-escalation strategies.
- Monitor for safety concerns and immediately communicate any issues to the Driver and program staff.
- Document and report incidents, behaviors, or safety concerns according to agency policy.
- Build supportive, professional relationships with youth while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Assist with headcounts, passenger logs, and trip documentation.
- Ensure all passengers follow safety procedures (seatbelts fastened, remaining seated, etc.).
- Support emergency procedures as directed by the Driver (e.g., evacuations, first aid).
- Participate in staff trainings related to crisis intervention, trauma-informed care, and safe transportation practices.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Prior experience working with youth or individuals with behavioral health challenges preferred.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to remain calm in stressful situations and respond appropriately to behavioral incidents.
- Must pass background check, drug screening, and agency-required trainings (CPR, First Aid, Crisis Intervention, etc.).
- Ability to sit, supervise, and assist passengers for extended periods.
Work Conditions
- Position involves frequent interaction with youth who may display challenging behaviors.
- Work may require evenings, weekends, and varied schedules depending on transportation needs.
- Requires riding in vehicles in all weather conditions.

- Ride along with agency drivers to supervise and support youth during transport.

- Ensure safety and order in the van using positive behavior management.

- Build supportive, professional relationships with youth while maintaining boundaries.
What We’re Looking For
- High school diploma or GED.
- Experience working with youth (especially with behavioral/mental health needs) preferred.
- Patience, strong communication skills, and the ability to de-escalate challenging behaviors.
- Must pass background check and agency trainings (First Aid, CPR, Crisis Intervention).
