Traffic police officers are responsible for enforcing traffic laws, promoting roadway safety, investigating crashes, and educating the public. Typical duties include:

  • Patrol streets and highways to enforce traffic laws and reduce crashes.
  • Stop vehicles for speeding, reckless driving, DUI, seat belt violations, expired registrations, and other traffic offenses.
  • Issue warnings, citations, and make arrests when necessary.
  • Investigate traffic collisions by documenting the scene, interviewing witnesses, taking photographs, measuring evidence, and preparing reports.
  • Direct traffic during accidents, road closures, construction, parades, sporting events, emergencies, or power outages.
  • Respond to traffic-related calls for service, including disabled vehicles, roadway hazards, and hit-and-run crashes.
  • Conduct DUI investigations, including standardized field sobriety tests and breath testing when certified.
  • Operate speed detection equipment such as radar and LIDAR.
  • Assist stranded motorists with vehicle problems, flat tires, or arranging towing services.
  • Testify in court regarding traffic citations, crash investigations, and criminal traffic offenses.
  • Educate the public on safe driving practices through schools, community events, and traffic safety campaigns.
  • Coordinate with road maintenance crews and emergency responders during incidents affecting traffic flow.
  • Prepare detailed reports, citations, crash diagrams, and maintain accurate records.
  • Enforce commercial vehicle regulations and conduct truck inspections where authorized.
  • Monitor school zones, pedestrian crossings, and areas with high crash rates.
  • Provide security and traffic control for VIP escorts, funerals, and special events.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and state motor vehicle codes.
  • Ability to safely operate emergency vehicles.
  • Strong communication and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Excellent observation and investigative abilities.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and make sound decisions.
  • Proficiency with report-writing software, in-car computers, radar/LIDAR devices, and body-worn cameras.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods, direct traffic, and work in adverse weather conditions.

Salary : $53,000 - $55,000
