Fleet Collections Specialist

AK & Sons
Job Type: Full-Time
Work Location: In Person

Overview

AK & Sons is a vehicle leasing company that provides vehicles to independent drivers, including rideshare and delivery drivers.

We are seeking a confident, persistent, and highly organized Fleet Collections Specialist to manage the collection of unpaid tolls, parking and traffic citations, and other outstanding driver-related charges.

This is not a traditional accounts receivable position. Tolls and citations may arrive days or weeks after they occur, vehicles may transition between drivers, and drivers may dispute charges or fail to make promised payments. The Collections Specialist must determine who was responsible for the vehicle when a charge occurred, verify the amount owed, contact the responsible driver, and pursue the account through resolution.

This position requires someone who is comfortable having difficult conversations and directly asking for payment. The right candidate will be firm and persistent while remaining professional, controlled, and respectful.

Responsibilities

  • Review tolls, parking citations, traffic-related charges, and other outstanding driver balances.
  • Determine which driver was responsible for a vehicle on the date and time a charge occurred.
  • Research lease dates, vehicle assignments, toll records, citations, and account histories to verify responsibility.
  • Contact current and former drivers to collect outstanding balances.
  • Clearly explain charges and provide supporting documentation when appropriate.
  • Request immediate payment when appropriate and obtain specific payment commitments.
  • Establish authorized payment arrangements when necessary.
  • Consistently follow up on unpaid balances, missed payments, and broken payment promises.
  • Handle driver disputes professionally and investigate whether disputed charges are valid.
  • Correct charges when company records establish that the wrong driver was assigned responsibility.
  • Maintain detailed notes regarding collection attempts, conversations, disputes, promises to pay, payments, and required follow-up.
  • Maintain an organized collection pipeline and prioritize accounts requiring attention.
  • Escalate unresolved accounts to management when normal collection efforts have been exhausted.
  • Work with management and operations staff to resolve discrepancies involving vehicles, drivers, contracts, and account balances.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential financial and driver records.

What We Are Looking For

Collections in our business requires more than sending an invoice or making one telephone call.

A driver may tell you:

“Those aren't my tolls.”
“I don't have the money.”
“I'll pay you Friday.”
“That ticket happened after I returned the car.”

We need someone who can determine the facts, explain the documentation, distinguish a legitimate dispute from an excuse, obtain a commitment, and follow through until the account is resolved.

The successful candidate should be:

  • Assertive and confident.
  • Persistent and difficult to discourage.
  • Comfortable asking directly for payment.
  • Comfortable dealing with difficult or argumentative individuals.
  • Calm and professional under pressure.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Strong at negotiation and problem-solving.
  • Consistent about following up on commitments.
  • Able to manage numerous open accounts simultaneously.
  • Capable of working independently and taking ownership of assigned accounts.

Being effective in collections does not mean being hostile or disrespectful. We want someone who can be tough when necessary while maintaining professionalism and good judgment.

Qualifications

Previous collections experience is strongly preferred.

Experience in automotive finance, vehicle rental or leasing, repossession, subprime auto lending, consumer collections, property management collections, insurance recovery, or another high-contact collections environment is particularly desirable.

Candidates should also have:

  • Strong telephone and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience negotiating payments or resolving account disputes.
  • Excellent documentation and recordkeeping skills.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel and office software.
  • Ability to review dates, transactions, contracts, and account records accurately.
  • Strong follow-up and time-management skills.

Automotive or fleet experience is helpful but not required.

How Success Is Measured

Success in this position is based on results—not simply the number of calls made.

The primary objective is:

Identify the responsible driver → verify the balance → make contact → obtain payment or a firm payment commitment → follow up → resolve the account.

Performance will include the amount and percentage of outstanding balances recovered, the reduction of aged balances, successful follow-up on payment commitments, the accuracy of account assignments, and the quality of collection documentation.

This Position May Not Be a Good Fit If

This position may not be right for someone who is uncomfortable asking people for money, avoids difficult conversations, gives up after unsuccessful contact attempts, accepts repeated payment promises without following up, becomes personally argumentative with customers, or dislikes detailed recordkeeping.

Why This Role Matters

Every unpaid toll, citation, or driver-related charge becomes an expense carried by AK & Sons until it is recovered from the responsible driver.

With numerous vehicles operating every day, individual charges can quickly become substantial outstanding balances. The Fleet Collections Specialist therefore plays an important role in protecting the financial performance of the company.

We are looking for someone who will take ownership of the collection process, remain persistent, and get results while treating our drivers professionally.
