What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tow Truck Operator position at Riddle's 24 Hour Towing and Lockout LLC?
Rollback Tow Truck Driver – Elkton, KY
Riddle’s 24 Hour Towing & Lockout LLC / Merciful Towing is expanding our Western Kentucky operations into the Elkton, Kentucky area and is looking for the right person to join our team as a Rollback Tow Truck Driver.
Previous towing experience is preferred, but not required. We are willing to train the right individual who has a strong work ethic, good judgment, a willingness to learn, and an interest in building a career in the towing and recovery industry.
About the Position
Towing is not a typical driving job.
This industry is demanding, unpredictable, and fast-paced. Drivers work in all weather conditions, alongside busy highways, at accident scenes, on private property, and with customers who are often already having a bad day.
Hours can vary, calls can come at inconvenient times, and nights, weekends, holidays, and after-hours work are part of the towing industry.
At the same time, this career offers significant opportunity for someone who wants to learn a skilled trade and grow with a company.
We are looking for someone who wants more than just a paycheck. The right individual will have the opportunity to learn multiple types of towing and recovery equipment and advance as their experience, ability, and responsibility increase.
Responsibilities
The selected driver will be expected to:
- Safely operate a rollback tow truck.
- Load, secure, transport, and unload vehicles and equipment.
- Respond to police, AAA, roadside assistance, customer, accident, and other towing calls.
- Perform proper daily pre-trip inspections.
- Identify and report maintenance or safety concerns.
- Maintain a clean, professional, and properly equipped truck.
- Complete required paperwork and electronic call documentation accurately.
- Communicate professionally with customers, dispatchers, law enforcement, military personnel, and management.
- Work safely around traffic and in roadside environments.
- Be available for nights, weekends, holidays, and after-hours calls as scheduled.
- Learn proper towing, winching, recovery, securement, and roadside procedures.
- Cross-train on additional company equipment as experience and ability increase.
All drivers are expected to continue learning.
Being hired as a rollback driver does not mean you will only learn to operate a rollback. We expect our drivers to learn additional equipment and expand their capabilities as they progress with the company.
Opportunities are available for qualified drivers to advance into medium-duty, heavy-duty, recovery, and other specialized towing operations.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be 25 years of age or older.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Have a driving record acceptable to our insurance carrier.
- Be able to pass all required criminal background checks.
- Be eligible to perform work for the law enforcement agencies, motor clubs, military installations, and other customers we service.
- Be able to meet requirements for access to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where our drivers operate regularly.
- Meet applicable AAA and other customer/vendor eligibility requirements.
- Be dependable and available when scheduled.
- Be capable of working independently and making sound decisions.
- Be able to work outdoors in extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and other adverse conditions.
- Be physically capable of handling straps, chains, dollies, winch lines, equipment, and other towing-related duties.
- Be willing to work a demanding and sometimes unpredictable schedule.
- Be willing to learn, accept instruction, and follow company policies and procedures.
Because we perform work for multiple law enforcement agencies, AAA, Fort Campbell, and other contracted customers, successful completion of required background screening is a condition of employment.
Our insurance carrier also requires drivers to maintain an acceptable driving record.
CDL & Experience
Previous towing experience is preferred but not required.
We provide on-the-job training for the right candidate.
A Class A CDL with no restrictions is strongly preferred, but is not required to apply.
Applicants possessing an unrestricted Class A CDL who are capable of operating manual-transmission commercial vehicles may qualify for a higher starting rate of pay, depending on experience and demonstrated ability.
Pay
Pay is based on experience, licensing, and demonstrated ability.
Applicants with towing experience, an unrestricted Class A CDL, or other relevant commercial driving experience may qualify for higher starting pay.
Earning potential increases as drivers become trained and qualified to operate additional equipment and handle more advanced calls independently.
What We Offer
- On-the-job training.
- Newer, well-maintained, state-of-the-art towing equipment.
- Training on multiple types of towing and recovery equipment.
- Career advancement opportunities.
- Opportunity to advance into medium-duty and heavy-duty towing and recovery.
- A growing company with opportunities for employees who want additional responsibility.
- Take-home truck once training is successfully completed and the driver is approved for independent operation.
- The opportunity to build a long-term career in the towing and recovery industry.
Who We Are Looking For
We can teach someone how to operate towing equipment.
What we cannot teach is work ethic, dependability, attitude, common sense, and the willingness to learn.
We are looking for someone who will show up, take care of their equipment, treat customers professionally, follow instructions, work safely, and take pride in becoming good at this profession.
If you are looking for a simple Monday-through-Friday, 8-to-5 driving job, towing may not be the right fit.
If you are interested in learning a skilled trade, operating specialized equipment, helping people, working in an environment where every day is different, and building a career with room to advance, we would like to hear from you.
