Role of Project Engineer at RPD
Project Engineers support the project estimating and project management teams in various capacities while learning the nature of our culture, our projects, our approach and our systems. Essentially an assistant Project Manager, responsibilities increase over time as the Project Engineer gains applicable knowledge and experience. A Project Engineer could work for multiple Project Managers on multiple projects at one time and/or could be pulled in to help with a project estimate.
In our context, the path to Project Management is through Project Estimating and Project Engineering, providing training and support while learning the cost and acquisition side of the job, then transitioning to an assistant Project Management role. The goal is to cross-train candidates in both capacities while they learn our business and culture, prior to actually running work.
Specific project engineering functions include:
- Plan reviews, scope of work, pre-job planning.
- Submittal review, cut sheets, shop drawings.
- Subcontracts.
- Coordination/communication with subcontractors.
- Coordination/communication with JHA’s (Jurisdictions Having Authority).
- Project meetings, meeting note drafting and distribution.
- RFI’s (Request for Information) and Engineer coordination.
- Project scheduling.
- Job costing and quantity reporting using GPS.
- Change orders.
- Value engineering.
Role of Project Manager at RPD
Awarded projects are handed over to our project management team to build. Our team of Project Managers, Project Engineers and Project Superintendents currently construct ~$70-80M worth of work each year. They are highly experienced, highly skilled, and highly relational, contributing to our great reputation and success in the industry.
Construction is a very challenging, high-paced occupation that requires organization, great communication, and the ability to solve complex problems. Project Managers are responsible for the success of every project, which involves dealing with people, money, and deadlines. So, it can be a very high stress position.
Project Managers are primarily responsible to ensure the success of each project, which means:

Ideal Candidate Qualifications
- High School graduate.
- Two or four-year degree in a related field (Civil Engineering or Construction Management).
- 3-5 years of experience in the civil construction industry.
- Proficient with technology and software, including MS Office Suite of tools.
- Experience with scheduling and estimating software.
- Demonstration of mathematical proficiency.
- Able to gather information to solve problems.
- Good personal/inter-personal/communication skills.
- Organized and thorough.
- Great work ethic, flexible mindset.
- Dependable/reliable and self-motivated, eager to learn.
- Good attitude, even-tempered.

RPD Hiring Process
1. Recruiting platform initial application – applications and resumes received in response to RPD job advertisements on a recruiting platform will be vetted for alignment between the requirements of the position and the applicant’s qualifications.
2. Qualifying applicants will receive communication inviting them to participate in a formal application process. At this point applicants will become candidates.
3. Candidate applications will be reviewed by a panel and narrowed down to the most qualified candidates for each position.
4. Selected candidates will be invited to participate in an in-person (preferred) or online interview with the hiring team. Candidates who were not selected will be notified as such.
5. Upon completion of all candidate interviews, job offers will be made to those selected. Candidates who were not selected will be notified as such.
