Lead Painter / Crew Lead Job Overview

Richmond Renovations is seeking an experienced and motivated Lead Painter / Crew Lead to oversee painting crews on residential, commercial, and institutional projects throughout Iowa. This position is responsible for leading crews, maintaining quality workmanship, ensuring projects stay on schedule, and communicating effectively with both management and clients.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with strong leadership skills who can read project plans, organize daily work, solve problems in the field, and lead by example while maintaining Richmond Renovations’ high standards of craftsmanship and professionalism.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise painting crews while maintaining a productive, positive, and professional work environment.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, and project scopes to ensure work is completed according to contract requirements.
  • Plan daily work activities and delegate tasks based on crew members’ experience and project priorities.
  • Ensure projects stay on schedule while maintaining high-quality workmanship and minimizing material waste.
  • Train and mentor painters on proper painting techniques, safety procedures, equipment operation, and company standards.
  • Perform quality control inspections throughout each phase of the project and correct deficiencies before completion.
  • Communicate project progress, challenges, and material needs with project managers and company leadership.
  • Prepare surfaces by cleaning, scraping, sanding, patching drywall and plaster, caulking, priming, and performing other necessary repairs.
  • Apply paints, stains, coatings, and specialty finishes using brushes, rollers, and commercial airless spray equipment.
  • Calculate material quantities and verify that all necessary tools and equipment are available before work begins.
  • Coordinate deliveries and maintain inventory of materials, equipment, and supplies on the job site.
  • Ensure all work is completed safely while following OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and customer site requirements.
  • Maintain clean and organized job sites and company vehicles.
  • Build positive relationships with customers, subcontractors, inspectors, and other trades while representing Richmond Renovations professionally.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of professional painting experience, with previous crew leadership or foreman experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings, specifications, and project documents.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, train, and manage crews effectively.
  • Thorough knowledge of commercial and residential painting systems, surface preparation, coatings, and application methods.
  • Experience operating airless sprayers, conventional spray equipment, pressure washers, sanders, and other painting equipment.
  • Ability to identify painting defects, troubleshoot issues, and implement quality corrections.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Basic math skills for measuring, estimating materials, and calculating quantities.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with customers, project managers, and team members.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA safety standards and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and work from ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and other elevated work platforms.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record preferred.

Pay: $20.00 - $28.00 per hour
