As a Communications Dispatcher II, you'll handle complex, high-priority incidents while serving as a leader on the floor—mentoring newer staff and stepping into a supervisory role when needed. What You'll Do
- Evaluate and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls
- Dispatch police, fire, and other public safety units
- Provide officers with critical incident details—warrants, suspect information, vehicle status, history, and Knox Box data
- Operate radio systems, CAD, multi-line phones, and citywide camera systems
- Deliver emergency medical instructions when required
- Prepare and review logs, records, and reports
- Train and mentor Dispatcher I staff and Call Takers
- Perform Shift Supervisor duties when assigned
- Coordinate mutual aid and inter-agency operations
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience: At least 18 months of full-time public safety dispatch experience
- Typing: 30 net WPM (no more than 15 errors)
- Certificate required (issued within past 6 months from a recognized institution)
- Certification:
- POST-certified 120-hour Basic Dispatcher course, OR
- POST Equivalency Examination certificate
- Documentation required with application
Hiring Standards
- No felony convictions
- No use within the past 3 years of cocaine, hallucinogens, LSD, heroin, methamphetamine, MDMA (Ecstasy), or psilocybin
- Must pass a background investigation (criminal history, fingerprinting, polygraph, credit check, and drug history screening)
- Must qualify for and maintain use of respiratory protective equipment
- COVID-19 vaccination required for hires on/after October 18, 2021 (unless approved exemption)
