Job Qualifications

Education: Educational Specialist degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in educational leadership, school curriculum, or a related field is required. A doctorate degree is preferred.

Certification or Licensure: Must possess or meet the qualifications for a Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) Certification in Educational Leadership or equivalent out-of-state leadership certification.

Skills: Demonstrates effective school or district level leadership in academic program development and evaluation. Demonstrates the ability to build and lead collaborative, inclusive teams while exercising sound decision-making to balance academic priorities and ensure curriculum and federal program compliance. Demonstrates knowledge of Special Education requirements, national and Georgia standards, instructional strategies, assessment systems, and federal education regulations. Demonstrates the ability to manage multiple priorities within a complex educational system, use data to inform planning and reform efforts, and apply technology and writing skills to prepare reports and presentations. Demonstrates strong interpersonal, communication, and cross-departmental collaboration skills to support cohesive implementation of academic programs and initiatives.

Work Experience: Three or more years of successful teaching experience and three or more years of progressively responsible administrative experience in curriculum and instructional leadership roles are required. Experience with district-level curriculum development and evaluation is preferred. Documented success leading large-scale academic initiatives is required. Other combinations of relevant education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the position effectively may be considered.

Primary Duty

The Chief Academic Officer provides leadership for the development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of the district’s instructional and academic programs, including Teaching and Learning, Special Education, High School Programming and Workforce Development, and Georgia Network for Educational and Therapeutic Support (GNETS). This position involves implementing the academic vision and strategic plan, ensuring alignment with the Profile of a Graduate. The Chief Academic Officer oversees curriculum, instruction, assessment, and student support initiatives to improve academic outcomes and collaborates with district and school leaders to ensure compliance with state and federal instructional requirements.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the continued advancement of student achievement including special education supports, ESOL, gifted services, and advanced studies.
  • Overseas data collection for reporting and management as required for federal, state, and local mandates.
  • Attends and participate in local, state, and national initiatives to ensure the district implements the most effective research-based instructional practices.
  • Works with schools and departments in the monitoring of student achievement and school effectiveness.
  • Assists with the analysis and presentation of research findings and evaluation results.
  • Assists the Assistant Superintendent to ensure all support systems are in place to meet student growth and school effectiveness measures.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk, stand, and sit.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to travel throughout the school system to provide support and monitor services being provided. Attendance at evening School Board meetings, presentations, ceremonies, and school programs required. Overtime or night work may

be required.
