POSITION: Environmental Service Employee (ESE) Class II
REPORTS TO: 1. Director of Facilities (Evaluator)/Chief of Operations 2. Building Principal (Administrative Team) 3. Environmental Service Head Class I
SUMMARY: • 191 Days or 260 Days, salary based on Richmond Community Schools Classified Contractual Salary Schedule • The 1st Shift ESE II is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly school environment during daytime hours. This position focuses on maintaining the cleanliness of all areas of the building and grounds. This includes responding to spills, accidents, and deliveries. • The 2nd Shift ESE II is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly school environment during afternoon and evening hours. This position focuses on classroom cleaning, restroom sanitation, waste removal, and preparing the building for the next school day or nighttime events. The custodian ensures that all areas meet cleanliness, safety, and health standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, hallways, cafeterias, gyms, restrooms, and common areas • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and dust floors, furniture, and fixtures • Empty trash and recycling receptacles and dispose of waste properly • Refill restroom supplies (toilet paper, soap, paper towels) • Clean and disinfect restrooms, sinks, toilets, and drinking fountains • Lock and secure doors, windows, and gates at the end of the shift • Set up or break down rooms for evening events, meetings, or activities as needed • Perform minor maintenance tasks (changing light bulbs and air filters, tightening fixtures, reporting repairs) • Operate and care for custodial equipment such as floor buffers, vacuums, mowers, scrubbers, carpet cleaners, snowplows, snow blowers, and trimmers • Wax and polish floors (260) • Window washing • Maintain safe and clean exterior walkways and entryways, especially during inclement weather • Painting • Follow proper procedures for handling cleaning chemicals and equipment • Respond to spills, accidents, or emergency cleaning needs promptly • Follow district safety policies, OSHA guidelines, and school procedures • Report safety hazards, vandalism, or maintenance issues to supervisors • Complete tasks on pass down tasks • Assigned duties when students are not in the building may require additional duties • Any other duties as assigned by a supervisor (Director of Facilities, ESE I, Building Administrator)
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Required: • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision • Knowledge of cleaning methods, supplies, and equipment • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Preferred: • High school diploma or GED preferred • Prior custodial or janitorial experience preferred (school or institutional setting a plus)
Language Skills: • Good oral and written Communication skills • Must be able to read and understand MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets)
Reasoning Ability: • Must be able to problem solve
Mathematical Skills: • Basic math

WORK ENVIRONMENT: • School buildings, including classrooms, restrooms, common areas, athletic venues and grounds • Evening and night hours, when students are typically not present • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, and noise from equipment
