General Description:
The Transition Specialist, under the general direction of the Director of Exceptional Education, assists in the planning, development, organization, supervision, and implementation of programs and services related to post-secondary transition. The Transition Specialist presents students and families with information, assistance and advice concerning education, training and employment opportunities. The Transition Specialist coordinates linkages to post-secondary agencies and support services, and promotes departmental goals through professional development, divisionwide college and career efforts, and student/family outreach.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Director of Exceptional Education in the development, implementation, and monitoring of a district-wide plan to provide appropriate and effective transition services
  • Provide professional development, technical assistance, and consultation to school staff, families, and students on transition plan requirements and development.
  • Provide students and families with information related to career interests, exploration, employment preparation and self-advocacy.
  • Provide individual and/or group transition counseling to students and families
  • Have understanding of post-secondary services available to specific populations of individuals with exceptional learning needs
  • Plan, organize and provide opportunities for students to explore training and employment options
  • Train school staff in the administration of career assessments and inventories to assist in the development of IEPs
  • Coordinate school and community work based learning opportunities and assist with linkages to postsecondary programs, services and supports
  • Communicate regularly with exceptional education teachers regarding particular needs of individual students
  • Conduct transition related workshops and provide transition related resources to exceptional education staff
  • Promote understanding of laws, eligibility requirements and availability of transition services
  • Facilitate the collection and analysis of transition compliance Indicators 13 and 14; identify relevant variables to improve transition services and post-school outcomes.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Director of Exceptional Education

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in special education, school leadership, or related field (preferred)
  • Valid VA special education teacher license (required)
  • Demonstrated familiarity with employment placements and training opportunities for students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws/regulations that protect individuals with disabilities in education, employment and community.
  • Knowledge of state and district policies and procedures under IDEA.
  • Experience with data collection, reporting and distribution.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate with colleagues, families, students, and community-based work site liaisons.

Salary : $74,656 - $114,804
