CLASS TITLE: BUILDING CLEANING CREW LEADER

GS302

OPERATIONAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The purpose of this class is to provide leadership and coordination to staff responsible for the custodial maintenance of County buildings and facilities; to participate in custodial operations as needed; to ensure the proper use and maintenance of assigned equipment; and to perform related duties as required. The class works within established guidelines and procedures and develops work methods and priorities under the general supervision of the Custodial Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Serves as lead worker for assigned custodial staff; coordinates daily work assignments, provides training and instruction, monitors work progress, and communicates staffing, performance, safety, and operational concerns to the Custodial Supervisor.

Performs various custodial duties, which include but are not limited to cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, cleaning windows and other glass surfaces, dusting and polishing furniture and other surfaces, wiping walls, cleaning window blinds, dusting baseboards, removing trash and emptying recycling containers, sweeping and mopping floors, scrubbing / polishing floors, stripping and waxing floors, vacuuming / spot cleaning / shampooing carpets, etc.

Provides training and guidance to custodial staff on cleaning procedures, equipment uses, chemical handling, safety practices, and departmental standards; assists with new employee orientation and reinforces procedures as needed.

Monitors inventory levels, distributes supplies and materials as needed, helps prevent waste, and reports supply needs before shortages occur.

Conducts routine inspections to ensure custodial work meets quality and safety standards; identifies deficiencies, provides direction for correction, and follows up as needed.

Ensures employees follow established safety procedures, including proper use of PPE, chemical handling and labeling, equipment operation, wet-floor procedures, and other applicable safety requirements.

Identifies and reports facility maintenance needs, safety hazards, damaged equipment, and other building concerns through established departmental procedures and follows up as appropriate.

Stocks restrooms with supplies.

Sweeps porches, walkways, breezeways, stairwells etc.

Performs light building maintenance as required, such as replacing light bulbs, arranging furniture and other items, etc.

Transports trash, supplies or equipment between County buildings and other destinations.

Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment; initiates repair work as needed.

Responds to and assists with emergency calls for assistance.

Operates vehicles and equipment such as vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners, buffers, and other tools and equipment as necessary to complete duties.

Prepares accurate and up-to-date records of work completed.

Attends training, workshops, meetings, etc., as necessary to enhance job knowledge and skills.

DATA INVOLVEMENT:

Uses computers, mobile devices, email, electronic work-order systems, timekeeping systems, and other County applications as required to communicate, document work, and complete assigned responsibilities.

PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT:

Requires regular interaction with employees, supervisors, County staff, and the public to provide information, guidance, and assistance. Provides work direction, assigns tasks, communicates expectations, and supports staff in completing assigned duties. Maintains professional and respectful working relationships and promotes a cooperative team environment.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:

Requires handling or using machines, tools or equipment requiring little or no prior experience, such as custodial / housekeeping machinery and tools.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

REASONING REQUIREMENTS:

Requires coordinating work in accordance with established policies, procedures, and guidelines, while using problem-solving skills to address routine operational issues.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations related to inventory, supply quantities, measurements, equipment use, and other routine custodial operations.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

Requires the ability to read and understand instructions, policies, procedures, safety information, and work orders; prepare routine written documentation and electronic communications; and communicate clearly with employees, supervisors, County staff, and the public as needed.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires the ability to perform clerical, manual, and technical tasks using established policies and procedures. Requires problem-solving, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize tasks and respond appropriately to changing operational needs.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:

Requires high school diploma, GED or specialized vocational training.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Requires over two years and up to and including four years.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:

Requires medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, reaching, stretching, pushing, pulling or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis, or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, toxic/caustic chemicals, disease / pathogens, etc.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, depth perception, odor perception, hearing and speaking abilities, and color perception.
