Social Worker - EJHS - Grant Funded Position

SUMMARY: The School Social Worker promotes the social, emotional and academic success of students. Social workers are specifically trained and qualified to analyze barriers to learning and achievement and are a licensed clinical social worker. School Social Workers provide a vital link between the home, school, and community to provide support services that impact students’ academic achievement. School Social Workers promote the academic mission of schools by fostering educational environments that are safe and supportive, emphasizing early intervention and promoting positive behavioral interventions.

EDUCATION/LICENSE/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Master’s Degree in Social Work
2. Valid license to practice clinical social work in Indiana,
3. Minimum of three (3) years of experience in social work and/or special education
4. Must possess strong leadership and communication skills
5. Additional qualifications as the Board or the State of Indiana require
6. Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills
7. Must have the ability to:
8. Work with diverse populations
9. Work independently without direct supervision
10. Initiate and balance multiple work projects
11. Work both independently and collaboratively with a team

ADDITIONAL/OPTIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Possession of an Indiana Professional Educator License (PEL)
2. Previous experience working in a K–12 school setting

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

Teaching/Learning and Effective Instruction

• Utilizes student, school and community data to plan, identify and implement evidence-based, culturally competent prevention strategies to meet student needs.
• Provides assessment and instruction/intervention at the school wide prevention level, at the targeted classroom/small group level and at the individual behavioral/mental health level to address issues that prevent learning readiness.
• Works collaboratively with school professionals parents and community leaders in a culturally responsive manner to support the optimum learning environment for students.
• Serves as a member of the educational evaluation multidisciplinary team with responsibilities that may include the preparation of a social and developmental history on a student. • Assists in developing positive behavioral intervention strategies.
• Provides brief individual and group counseling to students and families who need help with personal concerns or development problems.
• Consults with school staff and parents regarding strategies for helping students cope with personal and social concerns.
• Accesses and links community resources to students, families and the school in response to identified needs. To accomplish this responsibility, home and agency visits are required.
• Counsels students whose behavior, school progress, or mental or physical limitation or condition indicates need for assistance.Consults with parents, teachers, and other school personnel to determine causes of problems and effect solutions.
• Arranges for medical, psychiatric, and other tests and examinations that may disclose causes of difficulties and indicate remedial measures.
• Serves as liaison between student, home, school, and community resources such as family service agencies, child guidance clinics, courts, protective services, doctors, and clergy members.
• Leads group counseling sessions to enhance social development of individual members and provide peer support in areas such as grief, stress, or chemical dependency

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general counseling periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to use appropriate language and accompanying techniques with adolescents on one-to-one basis as well as in groups.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.
