SUPERVISES: Guidance Support Staff
CONTRACT DAYS: 195 days
SUMMARY: To provide, as a member of the Guidance Department, a comprehensive guidance program for students in grades 9-12 and specifically provide activities to meet the needs of their assigned caseload; consult with teachers, staff and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students; and provide support to other high school educational programs.
EDUCATION/LICENSE/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of three (3) years of teaching and/or guidance counseling experience preferred
- Meet the Guidance Counselor licensing requirements of the State of Indiana.
- Must possess strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Such additional qualifications as the Board or the State of Indiana may require.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
- Works to establish a warm, friendly, caring, and welcoming environment for students and encourages them to use the facility and the services offered.
- Assist with developing, planning, and coordinating the counseling services for students, including but not limited to, student scheduling, post high school educational and career guidance, financial aid counseling, and individual and group counseling.
- Is available to students to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, maturity, and educational success.
- Assist in the development of the master schedule.
- Develop, organize, and implement a follow-up study of high school graduates and dropouts.
- Assist with organizing, implementing, and announcing the various testing programs for students.
- Assist students in gathering college and career information.
- Assist students with all of the procedures of college application, including application for financial aid where needed.
- Assist students with job applications.
- Council to promote educational success for all students.
- Maintain accurate and timely records and reports.
- Assist groups or individual students with the development of educational and career plans.
- Assist students and their parents in evaluating the students’ aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data. Work with them in developing educational and occupational plans in terms of such evaluations.
- Counsel small groups and individual students with problems; refer severe problems to appropriate community resources.
- Consult with teachers, staff and parents in regard to meeting the developmental needs of students.
- Assist with the evaluation and revision of the counseling program as needed.
- Conduct counseling activities in the classroom in conjunction with administration and teachers.
- Consult with teachers to facilitate the infusion of counseling activities into the regular education curricula.
- Register students new to the school and orient them to school procedures and the school’s varied opportunities for learning.
- Assist with the planning and organizing the Senior Academic Honor Banquet.
- Assist with the planning and organizing the Senior Honors Day program.
- Assist with the development and implementation of an eighth grade transition program.
- Assist with planning, developing, organizing, and supervising an eighth grade open house for parents and students.
- Serves as a group facilitator for Student Assistance Program (SAP)
- Respond to crises when appropriate.
- Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.
- Maintains professional appearance while serving as administrator and/or supervisor.
- Ensures own regular and prompt attendance.
- Effectively completes regular and other job performance criteria as assigned.
- Promotes good public relations for the school district and community.
- Remains free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.
- Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general counseling periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to use appropriate language and accompanying techniques with adolescents on a one-to-one basis as well as in groups. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.
