Position Summary:
The Movers are responsible for the safe, efficient, and timely relocation of furniture, equipment, and various items across the campus. This role involves moving items between offices, classrooms, colleges, and storage facilities, ensuring that all items are handled with care to avoid damage. This includes event setup and breakdown, as well as heavy trash removal (worn furniture, old file boxes, etc.). The movers collaborate closely with departments, staff, and other team members to facilitate relocations and setups, contributing to a smoothly functioning university environment. The position also supports various operations within the CS&S Division, including housing and dining, parking and transportation, and delivery services.

Workplace Requirements:
HEAVY – Exert up to 70 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires walking, standing, lifting, and carrying heavy objects for up to eight hours per day and multi-limb coordination to operate equipment. Other physical requirements of the job include the ability to bend, crouch, or kneel; see; reach; climb; and balance.
Frequent lifting, carrying, and moving of heavy items.
Exposure to various weather conditions when moving items between buildings.
Use of moving equipment such as dollies, hand trucks, and furniture pads.
On campus position: This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in person. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.
This role is classified as an essential position, requiring on-site presence to effectively carry out its vital functions.
Hiring Range: $20.64 – $25.69 per hour
*Non-Exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are eligible for overtime.
Minimum Requirements:
No formal education
2 year of related experience
Valid Texas Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) with no more than 3 moving violations and no citations for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past 36 months
Skills:
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Familiarity with the use of basic moving equipment
Strong organizational and time management skills
Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 70 pounds independently and heavier items with assistance
Physical stamina to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods of time
Willingness to work flexible schedules, such as weekends and holidays, as needed
Ability to pass a background check as required by the university
Ability to work in various environments, including indoors, outdoors, and potentially in adverse weather conditions
Must be able to read, write, and speak English
Preferences:

Essential Functions:
Safely move furniture, equipment, and various items between university buildings
Efficiently load and unload items from vehicles with proper handling to avoid damage
Set up and break down furniture, equipment, and other items for university events
Maintain accurate records of items moved, including inventory control, tracking, and documentation
Operate moving equipment such as dollies, hand trucks, and furniture pads
Adhere to all safety guidelines and protocols
Communicate effectively with campus staff, faculty, and students to coordinate moving schedules
Respond promptly to moving requests and inquiries
Provide courteous and professional service at all times
Inspect moving equipment and report any issues to the supervisor
Assist with the maintenance and organization of moving equipment and supplies
Safely and efficiently move furniture, equipment, and other items between locations on campus
Load and unload items from trucks and other vehicles
Coordinate with Housing and Dining Services for the setup and relocation of furniture and equipment in dormitories and for catering events and functions
Perform a variety of tasks beyond moving, including event setup and other support duties as needed
Support delivery services by assisting in the receipt and delivery of packages and materials across campus and coordinating timely and accurate deliveries
Perform all other duties as assigned
