Rice Lumber is seeking an experienced and motivated Hardware Buyer & Merchandiser to ensure a world class customer experience at our large, full-service hardware store in Shelburne, Vermont.
The Hardware Buyer & Merchandiser will be responsible for store purchasing, inventory and merchandising while working closely with the Rice Lumber team to keep the store organized, well-stocked, and responsive to the needs of our customers. The Hardware Buyer & Merchandiser plays an important role in growing and strengthening our hardware store while helping customers find the products and expertise they need for their next project.
This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys working with people, has strong organizational skills, and takes pride in creating a well-run and welcoming store.
What You'll Do
Responsibilities include:
- Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked sales floor and stockroom
- Manage store inventory, monitor product movement, and identify opportunities to improve inventory turns
- Monitor slow-moving and dead inventory; develop promotions to move products
- Order and replenish inventory based on customer demand, sales trends, and seasonal needs
- Merchandise shelves and displays to maximize visibility and organization
- Stay current on new products and industry trends
- Develop strong relationships with customers and serve as a resource for questions about tools, hardware, and building products
- Work with suppliers to navigate supply chain disruptions
- Ensure pricing, signage, displays, and product information are accurate and up to date
- Identify opportunities to improve the customer experience and increase store sales
- Assist with special promotions, seasonal merchandising, and company events
- Ensure the store operates safely and efficiently
- Maintain showroom samples and ensure literature is up to date
- Support other Rice Lumber departments and responsibilities as needed
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate brings retail experience who is organized, proactive, customer-focused, and comfortable taking ownership of a busy store.
- Experience with inventory management, merchandising, purchasing, and vendor relationships (required)
- Knowledge of hardware, construction, lumber, or building materials (required)
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Ability to organize and prioritize multiple responsibilities
- Comfortable working in a hands-on retail environment
Schedule
- Winter Hours (November – April) Monday–Friday, 8-hour shifts with a 1-hour lunch
- Summer Hours (April – November) Monday–Friday schedule plus two Saturdays per month (8:00 AM–12:00 PM) during the busy building season.
