What are the responsibilities and job description for the IT Helpdesk Technician position at Rice Companies?
IT Help Desk Technician
Rice Companies is looking for an IT Help Desk Technician who enjoys solving problems, helping people, and keeping technology running smoothly.
In this role, you'll be a go-to resource for day-to-day technology support for Team Members working in our offices and construction/project locations. You'll troubleshoot hardware, software, Microsoft 365, connectivity, and user-access issues while helping Team Members get back to work quickly. This is a great opportunity for someone with early-career IT support experience who is ready to take ownership of day-to-day help desk needs while continuing to build broader IT skills.
The position is onsite at our main office, with remote support provided to employees at other company locations and project sites.
What You'll Do
Help Desk & Technical Support
- Provide friendly, responsive IT support in person, by phone, email, and remote-support tools.
- Troubleshoot and resolve Windows, Microsoft 365, Outlook, Teams, workstation, mobile device, printer, peripheral, and business-application issues.
- Diagnose common Wi-Fi, VPN, network connectivity, and user-access problems.
- Prioritize support requests based on urgency and business impact and keep Team Members informed through resolution.
- Research unfamiliar issues and work with vendors or escalate more complex problems when appropriate.
Equipment & Technology Setup
- Configure and deploy laptops, desktops, monitors, mobile devices, printers, and peripherals.
- Prepare technology for new Team Members, workstations, conference rooms, remote offices, and Team Member changes.
- Maintain accurate equipment inventory, assignments, warranty information, and asset records.
- Coordinate approved repairs, replacements, warranty service, and equipment purchases.
- Securely decommission equipment following established procedures.
User Accounts & Access
- Create, modify, disable, and troubleshoot accounts in Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft 365, and assigned business applications.
- Support technology needs related to Team Member onboarding, job changes, and offboarding.
- Assist with password resets, multifactor authentication, group memberships, permissions, and software licenses.
- Follow established security and access-control procedures and escalate unusual requests.
Security, Documentation & Improvement
- Support endpoint security, device management, patching, and safe technology practices.
- Recognize and escalate potential phishing, malware, unauthorized-access, and other security concerns.
- Maintain accurate help desk tickets, troubleshooting procedures, and knowledge-base documentation.
- Help Team Members understand technology through practical, approachable instruction.
- Identify recurring problems and recommend ways to improve support processes, standard configurations, and documentation.
- Gain exposure to broader IT projects and responsibilities as your skills develop.
What We're Looking For
Preferred experience:
- 1-3 years of help desk, desktop support, technical support, or similar end-user IT experience.
- Associate degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field preferred. Equivalent hands-on experience, training, or relevant certifications will also be considered.
You'll be successful in this role if you have:
- Hands-on experience troubleshooting Windows computers, hardware, peripherals, and Microsoft 365 applications.
- A basic understanding of networking concepts such as IP addressing, DNS, DHCP, Wi-Fi, and VPNs.
- The ability to independently investigate routine technical problems and know when to ask for help or escalate.
- Strong customer-service and communication skills, including the ability to explain technology to people with different levels of technical knowledge.
- Good organization and follow-through when managing multiple support requests.
- The judgment to handle confidential employee and company information appropriately.
Even better if you have experience with:
- Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID
- Microsoft 365 administration
- Endpoint management tools
- Help desk ticketing systems
- Remote-support software
- Supporting multiple offices, remote Team Members, or construction/project environments
Work Environment
This position is onsite at our main office and provides remote technical support to Team Members at other company locations and project sites.
Occasional travel to other company offices or project locations may be needed when an issue cannot reasonably be resolved remotely. Because we work in construction, there may also be occasional exposure to project-office or jobsite environments and associated safety requirements.
This position requires the ability to lift and move computer equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally bend, reach, or work under desks, with reasonable accommodation where applicable. And while IT sometimes requires flexibility, aside from the very occasional project milestone requiring extra evening attention, our team enjoys highly consistent working hours.
What Success Looks Like
In this role, success means:
- Team Members receive timely, helpful technology support.
- Issues are resolved or escalated appropriately, with dependable follow-through.
- New hires and Team Member changes have the technology and access they need.
- Equipment and asset records stay accurate and organized.
- Security and access procedures are consistently followed.
- Recurring problems become opportunities to improve processes and documentation.
If you're someone who likes solving problems, enjoys helping people, and wants an opportunity to grow your IT skills while supporting a diverse, hands-on business environment, we'd like to hear from you.
