Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and knowledgeable Tax Preparer / Accountant to assist individuals and businesses in preparing and filing accurate tax returns, along with accounting and payroll assistance for business clients. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of federal, state, and local tax laws, and a commitment to providing excellent client service. This role involves reviewing financial records, identifying potential deductions or credits, and ensuring timely and compliant tax filings. This role requires an understanding of general accounting principles, estate planning, and asset management to effectively support our clients' financial goals.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and file federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, businesses, or organizations.
- Review financial documents such as income statements, W-2s, 1099s, and other tax forms.
- Ensure tax returns are accurate and compliant with current tax laws and regulations.
- Identify potential deductions, credits, and liabilities to optimize clients’ tax positions.
- Communicate with clients to gather necessary information and clarify tax-related issues.
- Stay current on changes to tax laws, filing procedures, and deadlines.
- Maintain confidentiality of all client financial information.
- Assist clients during audits or respond to inquiries from tax authorities if necessary.
- Provide support to other tax staff during peak seasons.
Qualifications
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate's or bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
- Completion of a recognized tax preparation course is a plus.
Certifications:
- Registered Tax Return Preparer (RTRP) or Enrolled Agent (EA) preferred.
- PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number) required.
Experience:
- 1–3 years of experience in tax preparation, preferably in a public accounting or tax service firm.
- Experience with individual and small business tax returns preferred.
Skills:
- Proficiency in tax preparation software (e.g., TurboTax, Drake, TaxSlayer, or ProSeries).
- Strong understanding of IRS regulations and standard tax forms.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, or similar).
- Solid understanding of basic accounting principles and general ledger structure.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
