We’re seeking an Audit Manager who brings curiosity, attention to detail, and strong professional judgment to join our collaborative audit teams in Vermont and Maine!

This role requires regular travel to client locations, with occasional overnight or out-of-area travel. The Firm makes an effort to limit travel to three days per week.

Job Summary

The Audit Manager’s primary duty is the performance of work requiring advanced knowledge in accounting and auditing, including the exercise of independent professional judgment and discretion in planning engagements, evaluating audit evidence, and forming audit conclusions in accordance with applicable professional standards, while remaining current on professional, industry, legal and regulatory requirements and the Firm’s policies.

This role serves as a primary point of contact for clients, and contributes to risk assessment, process improvement, and internal control effectiveness. Depending on the size of an engagement, the Audit Manager may perform certain audit procedures; however, the primary duty remains the management, oversight, and professional evaluation of audit engagements.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinates with audit facilitation staff to ensure the 35 Steps of Auditing assigned to the Audit Department are completed for submission to Financial Reporting
  • Coordinates with Audit Director and Engagement Status Manager to schedule and properly staff engagements to meet targeted deadlines
  • Exercises independent professional judgment in planning audit scope, evaluating audit evidence, and determining appropriate conclusions in accordance with applicable professional standards.
  • Demonstrates effective client communication and organizational skills to address routine client inquires in a timely and effective manner
  • Leads and promotes sharing of information and concerns by all team members during engagement team meetings
  • Assigns work to team members, furnishes guidance, and adjusts workloads to accommodate daily priorities
  • Evaluates the control environment and proposes management letter comments to address best practices, efficiencies and effectiveness
  • Plans and performs tasks on various and/or multiple engagements simultaneously
  • Reviews, understands and addresses Engagement Manager and EQR comments including but not limited to workpapers, management letter, etc. to provide feedback; and requests or provides coaching or training on this feedback, as appropriate
  • Reviews and manages time budgets and expenses on engagements
  • Prepares engagement management letters
  • Carries out complex technical features and consultations of engagements
  • Presents and participates at governance board meetings
  • Maintains individual applicable level of required continuing professional education requirements
  • Updates project management progress daily
  • Understands and follows all Firm policies and procedures and the Firm’s Quality Management Document

What You'll Need

  • Associates degree or higher in accounting, business management or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the required knowledge and skills.
  • Minimum of two years of auditing experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications
  • Ability to collaborate with other people
  • Ability to organize time efficiently
  • Ability to use appropriate computer programs
  • Ability to make decisions
  • Strong delegation and coaching skills, with the ability to motivate teams under tight deadlines
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business-related journals, financial reports and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from client, regulatory agencies, or members of the community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

What's A Plus

  • 5-10 years of auditing experience
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license
  • Membership in AICPA and other relevant professional organizations, (state CPA societies, GFOA, etc.)

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while reviewing financial records and working at a computer.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, data entry, and handling documents.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and via video conferencing, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Occasional standing, walking, bending, or reaching in office or client-site environments.
  • Ability to lift and carry light materials (generally up to 10–15 lbs), such as files, laptops, or audit documentation.

Working Conditions

  • Work is primarily performed in an office environment or at client sites. The employee is expected to maintain a professional remote work environment that supports confidentiality, data security, and effective communication.
  • May involve extended periods of screen time.
  • Work hours may increase during peak audit periods or deadlines.
  • Minimal exposure to noise, dust, or other environmental factors typical of a professional office setting.
  • Must be able to travel to client worksites as assigned, with reasonable notice.
  • A valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation may be required based on assignment. The Firm makes an effort to limit travel to three days per week.
  • Overnight and out-of-area travel may be required for fieldwork or training. Employees may be expected to attend client meetings and/or travel beyond the regular business day.
